About the Author
Michael D. Yapko is a clinical psychologist and marriage and family therapist in private practice. He is a national and international trainer in brief therapy approaches to psychotherapy and director of The Milton H. Erickson Institute of San Diego. Yapko is internationally recognized for his work in the active treatment of depression, the use of clinical hypnosis and his advancement of the use of outcome-focused, short-term psychotherapy.

Excellent Intro text for Hypnosis study

This book is a great text to use for learning about hypnosis or to teach hypnosis to students. It is thorough, covering every significant issue that a typical hypnosis practitioner would deal with, and it presents a careful, balanced examination of many issues that are often misrepresented by either proponents or critics of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. The current edition (3rd) seems very well organized and conceptualized, and is pretty well updated about neuroscience correlates of hypnotic states. Yapko clearly wishes to make hypnosis a well-respected healing practice, and attempts to present hypnosis in a well-developed context that allows readers to see the many potential benefits of using hypnotic techniques as well as the possible hazards of misrepresenting or misapplying hypnosis. This is a well-researched, comprehensive, and well-rounded presentation of hypnosis which should serve many hypnosis practitioners well. It is hard to find a book on hypnosis of this quality, with most books on the topic focusing more on techniques and exalting the power of hypnosis than on addressing the many professional issues and contexts that practitioners will have to work with. The only significant fault in this book I can point out is the title, as Yapko proceeds to explain why he is not happy with the word "trance" as a descriptor for states of consciousness appearing during hypnosis. Perhaps he will decide on a new title the next time this text is updated. Meanwhile, Trancework is a book that sets a high standard for Hypnosis texts.

A sweeping, accessible overview of the hypnotic process.

Trancework is a wonderful achievement in presenting a thorough conceptual framework and understanding of trance states, hypnotic communication and the rationale for technique. Through its clear language, thorough review of research, and the introduction of powerful and novel teaching formats, Yapko carefully carries the reader from this well-established framework into very practical applications for psychotherapy. Its progressive building of concepts and logical applications results in a comprehensive discussion of how hypnosis and hypnotic language serve as natural extensions of the therapeutic process to basic skills and clear-cut guidelines for the integration of hypnosis into practice.

This book certainly provides the reader with many practical ideas for hypnotic language, induction procedures and clinical treatment planning. Yet, this reviewer believes the book's strength lies in how effectively it lays the groundwork for why these methods make sense. His sections on the concepts behind trance and hypnosis, human suggestibility and responsiveness, brain function, and various contexts in which hypnosis is practiced give the reader a depth of understanding that fully restore this meaning to an extent that few other texts achieve.

This is a book with few if any weaknesses. If anything, it may have attempted to do too much and yet, should any of its elements be removed, it would not be the complete work that it is. Yapko's thorough examination of the myths surrounding hypnosis and how they reflect misinterpretations of the process involved serve to illuminate the alternative truths involved. He most effectively dispels myths about hypnosis by examining ways in which responsiveness and suggestibility create the potentials through which we induce trance. This assignment of responsibility and further discussion of normal hypnotic phenomena allow the reader to grasp the purpose of techniques as means of utilizing, not manufacturing, trance behavior. In short, it successfully replaces the mindset of "doing hypnosis" with one of "being hypnotic."

Unlike many other introductory books, Trancework carefully and clearly examines those conditions and characteristics in people and in the therapeutic setting that lay the groundwork for hypnotic communication. I would recommend this book for students of hypnosis at any level of training. For the serious beginner, there is probably no more comprehensive and user-friendly text available. It has been my experience that many professionals who have completed advanced levels of training have not gained a comprehension of the hypnotic process sufficient to comfortably apply their skill with any range or effectiveness. In Trancework, these readers will discover an opportunity to expand their knowledge base while increasing the breadth of their hypnosis skills.

Because of its clarity and scope, this book would be of great interest to someone seriously curious about hypnosis.

Trancework

I have read multiple books on hypnotherapy and hypnosis. This is by far the best of the lot. Yapko's presentation of all the nuances of hypnotherapy and separating myth from reality is brilliant. The book takes you on a scholastic journey of hypnotherapy holding your hand all along. I wish I had read this book before as it would have saved me lot of time and energy trying to make sense out of theories and concepts that other books provide in a disjointed fashion. A "must have" book for a serious student of Hypnotherapy.

About the Author
Eric Mazur is the Balkanski Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard University and Area Dean of Applied Physics. As an internationally recognized scientist and researcher, he leads a vigorous research program in optical physics and supervises one of the largest research groups in the Physics Department at Harvard University.

Eric Mazur is author or co-author of over 250 scientific publications and holds two dozen patents. He has also written on education and is the author of Peer Instruction: A User’s Manual (Prentice Hall, 1997), a book that explains how to teach large lecture classes interactively. In 2006, he helped produce the award-winning DVD Interactive Teaching. Best Physics Textbook Ever. Really!

Mazur's textbook is a groundbreaking treatment of introductory physics topics that is based on sound pedagogical theory. In 20 years of teaching physics, my students have never had a textbook that supports their classroom experience. Instead of using a textbook for supplementary problems or as a paperweight, my students now read their textbook and answer questions related to their reading.

Pro's of the Book -

-The first 10 chapters are strictly 1-dimensional, no trigonometry is needed
-Following an introduction to kinematics (position, velocity, acceleration in 1-dimension), Mazur introduces Momentum as a foundational topic
-Conservation principles are moved to the front of the book (Momentum, then Energy)
-Explanations of System Identification (isolated/non-isolated) occur early in the textbook
-Mazur differentiates clearly between Conservation principles & the meaning of "constant"
-Two textbooks, one for reading and the other for problems. It's no longer necessary to flip back and forth between pages in the text.
-Outstanding and numerous concept questions, including ranking tasks
-Supports a Modeling based classroom
-Useful in both a calculus based or a trig/algebra based class
-Appropriate for almost any level of physics (I'm using Mazur's text to teach at a public high school)
-Flexible order for topics (but, I highly recommend following his initial order, with Momentum/Energy/Conservation moved to the front of everything else!)
-Supports teaching E & M utilizing a field approach

Cons
-If you've never thought about how students learn physics and want to keep doing things the way you've always done them, then this textbook isn't for you.
-Students in trig/algebra physics courses might not like the little bit of calculus in the book, but it's easy to avoid due to the structure of the book.

I've used Halliday/Resnick/Walker for most of my career. I've evaluated Cutnell & Johnson, Serway, Knight, and every other popular textbook. Beyond using them to prop stuff up in the room or for supplementary problems, my students don't find the textbooks helpful. While some are better than others, none of them compare favorably with Mazur's book.

This is the first and only textbook I've ever found that supports the Modeling approach to teaching physics. In my first year using Mazur's book, my students have achieved higher gains than ever before on the standardized test instrument we use widely in physics. As a long time/expert modeler, I'm thrilled that my students will finally have a textbook that is both rigorous and helpful!

my students learned a lot of physics from this book

When I decided to teach college physics using interactive engagement, instead of traditional passive lectures, I needed a textbook that I could --- in good conscience --- really insist that my students read before each class meeting, to prepare them for each new topic. Each chapter of Eric Mazur's book reads like a one-on-one discussion with a skilled teacher, who introduces new ideas methodically, anticipates points of confusion, and pauses the student at key points with questions to probe his or her understanding. In response to reading Chapter 8, one of my students wrote, "I think the organization of this book is excellent: starting with conservation laws and then transitioning to forces helps you to understand better the concept of force." Another student wrote, "I found the topic of forces quite interesting because it really tested my physics intuition. In many examples where the author would 'surprise' you with the answer, I found myself actually being surprised at how my intuition misled me. It seems that dealing with forces will take more getting used to than I imagined!" The students send me terrific questions and comments after reading each chapter of Eric Mazur's book, which in turn help me to focus our classroom time on the topics they find most challenging. It is really a joy to use this textbook.

Getting the most out of each chapter deliberately requires the student to pause after each page or so to answer a "checkpoint" question that challenges his or her understanding of what he or she just read. This takes some effort and thinking --- that's a good thing. But it means that this book works best when reading the text is an integral part of the course work, rather than using the book only as a reference to be skimmed through the night before homework problems are due.

I love the placement of conservation laws before forces, as it takes time for students to build intuition about forces. I like having a whole chapter devoted to acceleration: after reading this chapter, not one of my students confused velocity with acceleration for a ball tossed straight upward (a common conceptual error). I think it works out quite well to cover as many of the physics ideas as possible in one dimension first (chapters 1-9) before adding (in chapter 10) the complication of vector decomposition, trigonometry, etc. This keeps the focus on the physics, not the math, in the early chapters. And this book's approach nicely complements the traditional ordering of topics that most students have already seen in their high-school mechanics course --- which challenges students who took high-school physics to consider Newton's laws from a new perspective.

Using this book means budgeting, in your students' workload, for time to read each chapter carefully. And it means going through the mechanics topics in an order that differs from Halliday/Resnick and its many clones. But I found (after having used this book twice in manuscript form) that the result was a solid conceptual understanding of mechanics, and consequently a better understanding of how to approach problem-solving.

Mazur's textbook - A refreshingly different approach!

This textbook is quite unique and I am very happy to have used it for two semesters. Each chapter is divided into three sections. The first part is a non mathematical conceptual introduction to the topic. The complexity of the physics is thereby unveiled before the students gets confused by the math. This seems to work well. The math comes in from the second section and the last is a set of unique (and new) problems for the students to demonstrate their understanding.

What impressed me with this textbook (don't quote me!) is that although I have been teaching this course for years, I actually learned some new things while reading it. It is my plan to continue using it in the future. There are a few topics that need more coverage in the text but I have been assured that these gaps (just a few) will be corrected in the next edition.

The only other comment I should make is that I have only been using Volume II which covers E&M and Optics. I have only used one chapter from Volume I, so my comments should be read with this understanding.

Short: I like it!

Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, known to the world as Che, has led two lives. In the first of these lives, the Argentine-born revolutionary was a remarkable and flawed doctor-turned-guerilla who left behind a highly controversial political legacy. In the second, he was – and is – first and foremost an image. Specifically, he is one particular image in which he appears as a wavy-haired, bearded young man with a beret and an intense gaze. The photograph, entitled Guerrillero Heroico and taken on March 5, 1960 by Cuban photographer Alberto Korda, is said to be the most reproduced image in the history of photography. Although Che’s face, as captured by Korda, first achieved its global iconic status during the student revolts of the 1960s, it has subsequently reappeared again and again as a branding device for a wide array of products. Korda himself brought a copyright lawsuit against Smirnoff Vodka for using Guerillero Heroico in an advertising campaign, and since Korda’s 2001 death his daughter has gone to court with several other companies. There is little market for the type of revolution that Che advocated and pursued, but the aura of rebellion that his image exudes still carries a notable sway.

Great short reads

This is from 'Charles River Editors' and I enjoyed it . 'CRE' puts out short factual books that are superb . I would guess that most of their factual books are in the 50-70 page range . The books are concise and well written . The prices are great . I have been using them to explore subjects that interested me and they have not failed me yet . This one interested me because i personally despise these people and what they have done . Try the book or any 'Charles River Editors' books . Best buys on the net . Tom Harmon

The virtues of being open to new and transformative experiences are rhapsodized but not really illuminated in this discursive and somewhat gauzy set of linked essays. Cultural historian Solnit, an NBCC award winner for River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West, allows the subject of getting lost to lead her where it will, from early American captivity narratives to the avant-garde artist Yves Klein. She interlaces personal and familial histories of disorientation and reinvention, writing of her Russian Jewish forebears' arrival in the New World, her experiences driving around the American west and listening to country music, and her youthful immersion in the punk rock demimonde. Unfortunately, the conceit of embracing the unknown is not enough to impart thematic unity to these essays; one piece ties together the author's love affair with a reclusive man, desert fauna, Hitchcock's Vertigo and the blind seer Tiresias in ways that will indeed leave readers feeling lost. Solnit's writing is as abstract and intangible as her subject, veering between oceanic lyricism ("Blue is the color of longing for the distance you never arrive in") and pens�es about the limitations of human understanding ("Between words is silence, around ink whiteness, behind every map's information is what's left out, the unmapped and unmappable") that seem profound but are actually banal once you think about them.

This meditation on the pleasures and terrors of getting lost is-as befits its subject-less a coherent argument than a series of peregrinations, leading the reader to unexpected vistas. The word "lost," Solnit informs us, derives from the Old Norse for disbanding an army, and she extrapolates from this the idea of striking "a truce with the wide world." It's the wideness of the world that entices: a map of this deceptively slender volume would include hermit crabs, who live in scavenged shells; marauding conquistadors; an immigrant grandmother committed to an asylum; white frontier children kidnapped by Indians; and Hitchcock's "Vertigo." Solnit imagines a long-distance runner accumulating moments when neither foot is on the ground, "tiny fragments of levitation," and argues, by analogy, that in relinquishing certainty we approach, if only fleetingly, the divine.

Into the Blue

The social perception of loss is denotatively and connotatively negative. It's a word we associate with the agonies of death, the frustrations of deprivation, and the erosion of what was into what is not.

To lose is to succumb to the fate that awaits us all--the diminutive sense of depletion and reduction. Solnit, though, disagrees. In her stunning collection of essays that make up A Field Guide to Getting Lost, for Solnit, loss is a transformative force, rather than a negative one--a powerful impetus for change that moves into the world of the liminal--the spaces between moments rather than the spaces that constitute moments.

Relying on notable figures ranging in discipline and trade from Henry Thoreau, Conquistador Cabeza de Vaca, and Parisian performance artist and judo extraordinaire Yves Klein to pull her through from a state of solidity to that of the fluid, that of the blue itself--Solnit walks us through landscapes and worlds that are altogether foreign and exotic, to strangely convey the most familiar landscape of all--change.

Solnit alternates between the constant imagery of the solid, the grounded, the ideas that allow us to plant ourselves in the constant--only to transition into that of the "blue"--that of the ethereal and atmospheric, that of the liminal. Every other essay is titled: "The Blue of Distance" allowing for discussion of the philosophical means of the color blue as an aesthetic principle and metaphor of fluidity--the intent of which is to bring us into the space between relinquishment and acquisition--giving and taking.

More than a simple collection of essays, where Solnit succeeds is in the connection to the personal. We create ourselves through our association with others, picking and choosing tidbits of cultural ephemera we deem appropriate to absorb into our own lives--to make our own--making Solnit's viewpoint wholly relatable. She almost takes the form of overt autobiography. Association with Solnit's points becomes inherent.

Although, the collection seems sporadic at times--the essays jump and move and transition like a child hopping from puddle to puddle mid-rain storm--hence the exploratory milieu, making the readability erratic. A singular essay can cover topics ranging in breadth from her own home life, the world of the Conquistador and pre-colonial United States, to the diminishing microbes of our environment, and the death of the desert tortoise. It's fascinating and intriguing, but at times comes across disjointed.

Nevertheless, A Field Guide to Getting Lost is a philosophical treatise on the idea of flux--the essence of the middle, and the spaces between places in which our bodies and psyches transition to worlds and climes that are foreign and beautiful. The book is a success in that it reminds us, yet again, that the only constant in life is change.

My favorite book by Solnit is Wanderlust:a History of Walking. I enjoyed these essays but found myself getting lost at times. They would have benefited from some editing for focus and clarity.

I love this book for many reasons

I love this book for many reasons.

We all know that writing is a form of art and I love this book because Rebecca Solnit takes the art of writing to another level to the point where her readers actually DO GET LOST in her work. I honestly did not read this book from start to finish because I believed there was no need to. After the first few chapters I was fully satisfied and struck deeply by her words. This book is not coherent and it is fragmented with stories and I think that is a depiction of what life is like. There is no linear passageway and sometimes our lives walk amongst crooked paths before they can become straight again and I feel that her writing style mimics that idea.

Just buy the book and stop reading it when you feel lost. It'll be worth the journey.

Like millions across the globe, I was shocked when Michael died on that unforgettable day in June 2009. He kept a low profile after the image-shattering second child abuse allegations culminated in an acquittal in court four years earlier. But three months before his untimely death, he announced 50 shows at London's O2 Arena as part of a comeback tour called This Is It. All 50 dates sold out in record time, and I somehow obtained tickets for the opening night on July 8, which was later pushed back five days. After Michael's death, which placed him in the spotlight more than ever before, I read the few credible Michael Jackson biographies that were available. Although they provide plenty of insight, the primary focus is the personal life; in terms of his career, there are several gaps. There is almost zero information about Michael's final three studio albums�Dangerous,�HIStory�and�Invincible, or the remix album�Blood on the Dance Floor. Other gaps include parts of Michael's career outside the studio, such as the world tours, his fall out with Sony Music, his movie dreams, his work in the secretive last five years of his life and the preparations for This Is It. I couldn't fathom how there wasn't a book based solely on the 45-year career of a man many believe to be the greatest entertainer of all time. Then, one night early in 2010, something just clicked. I felt confident I could take on the challenge. I wanted to know a different Michael Jackson; to discover the untold stories and secrets behind an enthralling, albeit turbulent career. The aim was to write a biography about a whole other life; the Michael Jackson who made making music his life's work rather than the one portrayed on the front pages of the tabloids. I wanted to delve deeper into his career than ever before, and I didn't want to leave any stones unturned. But it was also important to remain objective and not take a fan's point of view.

About the Author
Mike Smallcombe is a journalist who currently resides in England.

Mike, who spent his youth living in both Germany and Cornwall, graduated from the University of Exeter with a degree in English Language before relocating to London, where he completed his journalist training with the Press Association. Mike then returned to the South West, where he joined the staff at Devon and Cornwall Media.

Mike has dedicated much of the past five years of his life to delivering an unprecedented account of Michael Jackson's career. By interviewing over sixty of Jackson's collaborators - many of them in Los Angeles - Mike gained access to the very closest figures behind his pulsating career.

After a few years at startups in Germany and the UK followed by a stint at home in Portland, Oregon, he and his family recently landed in Dublin, Ireland. When not devoting his time to things digital, he can be found herding his two daughters, shooting film with vintage cameras, or riding one of his bicycles.

Sean Kane is currently a Lead Site Reliability Engineer for the Shared Infrastructure Team at New Relic. He has had a long career in production operations, with many diverse roles, in a broad range of industries. He has spoken about subjects like alerting fatigue and hardware automation at various meet-ups and technical conferences, including Velocity.Sean spent most of his youth living overseas, and exploring what life has to offer, including graduating from the Ringling Brother & Barnum & Bailey Clown College, completing 2 summer internships with the US Central Intelligence Agency, and building the very first web site in the state of Alaska. Mind the subtitle - this is a "Docker for DevOps" book

Be careful to understand what this book is about before you order it. The subtitle is quite important: "shipping reliable containers in production." Although this is a deep topic that no one book cannot be a definitive reference for - this is precisely what this book is about. I happen to be interested in Docker for other reasons - for instance as a sandboxing tool in support of software development.

So if you're interested in Docker from the deployment and DevOps perspective, this book seems fine. That said, I think its a rather one-sided portrayal of a powerful tool that may have other uses.

Could have been good, but I can't recommend it.

Other reviewers have suggested that this book is good for beginners on the topic of using Docker in production. Respectfully, I disagree. There are a lot of well considered details included about the operation of Docker in a production environment, but there's a lot that's missing here. Overall, I while I believe that the details of the book are well considered, there is a lot of context missing that makes the material more difficult to understand than it should be.

Here's an example. In Chapter 9, "Docker at Scale", consider the section on running Docker on Amazon's EC2 service. The first step is to set up proper access in Amazon's IAM, and the authors provide a JSON snippet that will do so. Other than the mention of IAM, there's no discussion about where this code goes or how one would get it into production. Yes, someone familiar with AWS should know what to do with this, and, yes, this section assumes some familiarity with AWS. However, how much effort would it have taken to make this clear to the reader? One good sentence would do it, and doing so would improve the accessibility of this material to novices as well as the readability of the section greatly. The authors could broaden their audience and increase clarity with very little extra work, but they have to step back and read what they have written assuming that the reader doesn't know everything that they do.

Another example occurs just two pages later, when they show output from requesting details about a container instance within an AWS cluster. We get almost a page and a half of output, but then the authors don't describe any of the output or how it might be useful. What are the units? What do the numbers mean? How can I use this? How do I make the changes if I don't like what I see? I can figure this out, but why show me a page and a half of output without explaining what even a little of it means?

In my opinion, too much of the book is like this. The authors are clearly knowledgeable about the subject, the sentences are clear, and I don't doubt that they'd be good teachers of this material in an interactive environment. The problem is that readers of this book don't get to ask questions where clarification is necessary. I don't think the authors do a good job of contextualizing the details of operating Docker in a manner useful to those who don't already know most of this material. One can figure this stuff out with queries to online documentation, but, IMHO, the reason to buy a book is to have all that minutia aggregated into a coherent whole, and I just can't say that this is accomplished in this book. The book barely tips the scales at 200 pages, so I can't believe the authors were under pressure to keep the word count down. Another 40 pages of clarity would make it a lot more readable without making it overly long, and I'm guessing it would actually *shorten* the time it would take to read it cover to cover.

When assembling technical reviewers it can be tempting for authors to surround themselves with subject matter experts, but it is also important to find some way to look at the material from the perspective of the target audience. I don't know this is what happened in this case, but it sure feels like it to me. I don't know how much experience these authors have at writing, so my inclination is to put at least some of this on the managing editor. Someone should have been approaching the manuscript from the point of view of a reader at the low end of the experience scale, and I don't see any reason to think that this happened.

In any case, it's my opinion that the trees are all fine, but the forest gets lost. The best thing I can say about it is that if someone were to focus on these issues, a second edition could end up being pretty good.

Quick Intro to Docker

Just like the title says, this is a quick intro to Docker. The author does a very good job explaining the overall concepts of containers, some easy ways to get up and running, as well as an intro to the AWS ECS platform.

Unfortunately the code does not flow well online and lead to some very odd things, and the book itself has quite a few
