About the Author
Jay Newton-Small is a political correspondent for TIME, covering Congress, politics and foreign policy, and covered Hillary Clinton's 2008 campaign and her tenure at the State Department. She has focused extensively on women's role in Washington, as evidenced by her Oct. 2013 cover story, Women Are the Only Adults Left in Washington, about the 20 women senators who broke the logjam to get the government restarted and avoid default. She has interviewed every female member of Congress; every living past and present female cabinet member.

International appeal

Although this book is written about American women and is clearly geared to an American audience it has international appeal and relevance. At a time when most decision makers on the world stage are men it is a timely reminder of the impact women can exert once they have reached a critical mass. This is applicable not only to politics but just as importantly to organised religion and international business which remain key drivers in our social economy. Lack of respect for women in both overt and subtle forms is an underlying theme running through "Broad Influence". This situation is likely to continue until women in positions of power find themselves part of Newton-Small's critical mass where they are taken seriously as members of a now sizeable minority rather than lone figures of ridicule or condescension. One only has to consider the current preoccupation with this issue in Australia, arguably the world's most egalitarian society, to appreciate the value and potential influence of Newton-Small's observations.

Goes much deeper

This is another non-fiction book I was recently presently surprised by as it brought more to the table than I initially realized it would. The title of this volume makes one believe it will be an examination of women in politics, which it is, but it goes much deeper into a theory of a tipping point, called critical mass, that lets women become more powerful -- though not yet as powerful as men -- by forming deeper partnerships and community with each other in their roles. This book is a quick read, but a thorough one. I hope Newton-Small tackles similar topics in future publications.

Jay Newton Small has written an important and insightful book about what happens as women obtain positions of leadership commensurate with their ratio of the population. She brings her ideas to life with great stories -- a favorite is the discussion female Representatives had during the federal government shutdown. It's a book that deepened my understanding of what gender balance from elected office positions to the board room will mean for the way the world works (and it will largely create very beneficial outcomes). I highly recommend it.
