Saxon Math is the Absolute Best!

First of all, nothing beats Saxon Math. It's so gradual and digestible. Plenty of review for the students so they really absorb and memorize previous levels. One of the very best ways to learn Math.

One note about this edition - it is set up very differently than the Saxon 1,2, and 3 workbooks. The worksheets are all very basic review - and even the first 80-90 pages of the text are mostly review. Saxon 5/4 does not just pick up where Saxon 3 left off - which threw us off a good bit.

Since we do math pretty much 365 days a year so the kids have just a bit to do each day, are never overwhelmed, and never get a chance to forget what they learned, the lack of continuation from Saxon 3 was awkward. Our daughter was ready to just continue on, but got saddled with a lot of review.

Anyway, long live Saxon Math! The solution to America's math problems.

I LOVE Saxon Math Homeschool 5/4.
I HATE the confusing way they label, package, and market their books.
Contrary to other opinions, you do not NEED to buy the kit. The kit is composed of 3 books, the student workbook, the solutions manual, and the tests and worksheets. I personally only use the student workbook and in the future that is all I will purchase. Some parents may find the other manuals helpful but I bought them and they just sit on the shelf. There are a small number of "activity sheets" that are included in the "tests" book that in my opinion more properly belong in the workbook. I believe they were included in the tests book to induce you to purchase the kit. In any case, you can successfully teach the program just using the workbook.

Also, what's up with the numbering scheme? Does anyone know why they don't just call the books 4th grade, 5th grade, etc...? I find that confusing as well.

LOVE Saxon Math

This is my 4th year teaching math using Saxon Math. I am VERY pleased with the curriculum in general. Specifically, I like Saxon Math 5/4 for my 4th grade son because it has transitioned him from being a student who completely relies on me to walk him through each days lessons to him doing most of it on his own. It is written in a very easy to understand format. I also feel like it moves at just the right pace. I am already planning on purchasing Saxon Math again for next year.

The Activator Method

This is a must have if you are a chiropractor and use activator in your practice. The book is a mix of history of chiropractic and how activator was developed, and a useful manual for adjusting. I love this book and use it often to look up tests I don't use often or just to make sure I use the right line of correction.

Fabulous Book. Fabulous Method.

Dr Farias traveled to Toronto Canada in July 2012. I was fortunate to be one of his clients and flew from Victoria BC to work with him. It was the same cost as flying to Spain and a lot less exciting unfortunately! At least I had a place to stay with friends. And FYI he is in Toronto often if this is better for you.

I've worked with many specialists and voice coaches to heal focal dystonia that has affected my voice and abdomen for the past 10 years. In this time I have tried many healing paths. The biggest key I've discovered is that my activities and daily focuses played an important role in developing the condition. I also agree with several people here who said that it is a complex whole body problem, that certain people are more susceptible to than others and that our tendencies / personality plays a role. Unfortunately there is no single medical doctor who has incorporated all of the skills necessary to work with this multi-faceted problem because in western medicine, the disorder is incurable. If that is the case, then the causes that I've just outlined and are expressed by everyone who has dystonia, must be incorrect. My opinion and experience is that I trained the dysfunction into my body and thus, I can train it out again. Dr Farias' emerging SCIENCE is proving this. It's all in the book.

Before I was introduced by chance to 'Intertwined', I had seen the very best vocal specialists in Canada who are considered leaders in their field. They all concurred that unless speech therapy miraculously helped (which it has in some cases and I've since learned of more cases where people are in fact healing this disorder thus suggesting that it is in fact a 'curable' condition: provided the correct procedure for the individual is met) then my only option would be botox. Since I had worked with a number of voice teachers including Seth Riggs who is internationally known (google him) and others of equal calibre only to have some progress and then have it reverse, I tried botox.

The first time I received it, my voice was actually quite stable and I was pleased. I could even sing (enough for background vocals) though my range was a fraction of what it naturally is. Unfortunately it only lasted in this 'sweet spot' for about 3 weeks, book ended by too much breathiness and too much tension. Botox is a toxin, in fact one of the most potent we have yet discovered, and it operates by killing nerve endings. Therefore the dysfunction is lessened because the brain can't transmit all of the incorrect signals that it has habituated itself to doing (this is called maladaptive change in Intertwined and is the scientific evidence of how we literally 'train' this disorder into ourselves through obsessive and intensive training or repetition that is usually combined with a strong emotional tie. Also there is a genetic link that makes a person more susceptible and that also connects my condition to my grandmother who had dystonia in her spine.) But I digress. Botox therefore is a best guess scenario for the doctor to try to pin point how much and how often to treat the muscle group affected by dystonia. When I did it a second and third time, the results were not as good as the first. I really didn't like the idea of poison in my body for the rest of my life (you have to have it done every 6- 8 weeks) and since I had seen improvement through natural methods even if they did reverse themselves, I simply couldn't ignore the possibility that a better option existed. I've also since learned that botox can cause permanent damage despite the denial by the doctor administering it to me. So I took a break from botox and soon after discovered Farias's book 'Intertwined'.

I knew very quickly that Farias was onto something new because he understood my symptoms! It was all outlined in the first chapter as I recall. NO MEDICAL DOCTOR CAME CLOSE. Botox is very expensive. In Canada it is covered by the government (or at least partially) and I am sure that each session easily costs several hundred to a thousand dollars, in many countries. Also very important to understand is that botox WILL NOT help you solve the problem. It is a band aid at best and the symptoms always come back when the botox wears off. Ask your doctor.

I have worked with Farias over skype every few months since my in-person sessions in Toronto and it is the FIRST time I have seen consistent improvement. By my experience and understanding of the disorder I can understand how healing takes a long time for some people and very little for others. It is a uniquely individual disorder that only makes a semblence of sense when you look at hundreds of cases as we have the benefit of observing in Farias' book that is built upon that very scale of study.

One particularly important aspect that I have only absorbed a true understanding of recently is that dystonia is not an acute condition. In otherwords, it's not an issue with your foot if you're a drummer, or your voice if you are a singer. It is a global nervous system condition created by neurological patterning. This was the kicker for me. The fact is (and as another person stated on this thread of reviews) that by actively seeking resolution of the disorder by addressing the acute problem through every avenue that helps (try them all!) rather than covering it over with botox, I have a chance of healing something really important in my life AND avoiding having it crop up somewhere else.

I personally have used many modalities and healing methods to begin to develop an understanding of the things that built to my disorder and I am at last seeing them come together with improvement of my voice, all thanks to the foundation of Farias' method. I will be putting a blog on my website where you can view videos of my progress and read about my experiences and explorations. You'll see that I'm not finished yet but I'm sure better than I used to be. I'm deeply grateful to Farias for pulling together the threads of information that I would have taken decades to find on my own if ever. What's more, I am enjoying this remarkable journey. As book long overdue

I have bought and read "Rebellion of the Body" ,Dr. Farias' earlier book. While it was good, this one is much better. "Rebellion" relies on allegories to bring out key concepts about dystonia- this book is much more scientific and specific. I am currently working with someone to help cure my many years of dystonia and have learned so much already,but this book is like icing in the cake. I have found many " a-ha" moments in this book and have underlined many sections already.

I'm only halfway through it.... WELL worth the purchase!!

Informative but not as helpful as I had hoped.

I would have liked some sample therapies or at least suggestions as to how to find a therapist. I understand the author's hesitancy to suggest things to people whose conditions he hasn't assessed, but as therapy is rather difficult if not impossible to obtain in my location (and apparently in most locations), and as traveling to Spain to attend one of his seminars isn't an option, I'm rather at a loss as to where to go from here.

Fans of the earlier works will avidly follow the further adventures of the O'Keefe family as they embark on a 24-hour quest to stop the destruction of the world by dictator "Mad Dog Branzillo." with the help of an ancient rune, the assistance of a wise and fearless unicorn, and the use of "kything" ( a type of especially acute telepathic communication), 15-year-old Charles Wallace attempts to trace the connections over time and generations that have led to Branzillo's rise to power. L'Engle uses essentially the same voice throughout the reading, which sometimes makes it difficult to know who is speaking. In addition, a slight lisp and a tendency to overemphasize sibilant sounds detract from the quality of the listening experience. This is an example of a recording where the material is wonderful but would have been more effectively presented by a professional narrator rather an by the author. My favorite book

I read Wrinkle in Time when I was 11 and thought it was the best thing I'd ever read. Wind in the Door and Swiftly Tilting Planet were published when I was an adult. I liked Wind in the Door, but it didn't have the "agic"of Wrinkle. When I picked up Swiftly Tilting Planet, I thought that I would enjoy it, but it wouldn't be up to par with Wrinkle. Boy was I wrong!
Planet was the most magnificient book I've ever read. I'm 46 years old and have read thousands of books over my lifetime, including all of Madeleine L'Engle's titles. This story is so inspirational, suspenseful, frightning, heartbreaking and joyful. It's just the best.
I use The Rune when I need a little "igher power"in my life as well as traditional prayers. I recommend it to everyone. It may be complicated for some children, but Ms. L'Engle doesn't write down for anyone. It can be a joyeous experience for the imaginative child and adult as well.
I think I'll sign off and go read it again right now.

My favorite of the Time Quartet

This is perhaps my favorite book in L'Engle's famous "Time Quartet." Set a decade after the events of the previous book, A Wind in the Door, Meg Murray and Calvin O'Keefe are now married and she pregnant when he is sent overseas one Thanksgiving. She takes her mother-in-law to her family's home for the holiday, but the mood of the celebration is shattered when the President calls Mr. Murray with dire news: the Central American dictator Mad Dog Branzillo has gotten his hands on a nuclear arsenal, and his fingers are stroking the button. A cryptic rune uttered by Mrs. O'Keefe sends the 15-year-old Charles Wallace on a quest through time itself on a desperate search for the link between Calvin's family and the Might-Have-Been that he has to change to save the world.

Although this is, like I said, my favorite of the Time Quartet, it's safe to say it wouldn't be as good a book without the previous two. L'Engle tries to make the story self-contained, but there's very little in this book in the way of character development, she relies heavily on readers' conceptions of the characters from the previous novels to drive this story forward. The book is also very episodic -- Charles Wallace goes Within various people at various times, and with each of them he experiences a lifetime. The book almost reads like a series of interconnected short stories linked through the framing sequence of Charles trying to stop Branzillo. As a result, there are multiple antagonists and protagonists alike, giving the book a very epic, far-reaching feel.

This is, like I said, my favorite of the Time Quartet -- I just wouldn't recommend reading it by itself.

Taking a stand against the "powers of darkness"

A lot of the reviews begin with the reviewers' stories of when they first read the book. Like them, I discovered "A Swiftly Tilting Planet" when I was very young, and I still love it. It is the kind of book you can read again and again as you grow up. Each new time it is read it can reveal new layers of meaning. When I first read it, I thought it was just an adventure story with a unicorn (a really great adventure story, of course). Then I began to see how it took a stand for love and against apathy. In the plot, Charles Wallace has to fight the Echthroi (evil forces). Writing this story was Madeleine L'Engle's own way of fighting the Echthroi, which really exist. Through her story, she warns us about not letting the "Might-Have-Been's" haunt us; she asks us to take a stand "in this fateful hour" against the "powers of darkness." If this is too mystical for some of you to stomach, then you probably have not entered this author's world, which, like the Christian world, is teeming with angels and demons. In this world, everyone must choose sides.
This is a book that children should have on their bookshelves. It may be a little to heavy for them at first, but as they get older, the layers of meaning will begin to become apparent to them. I have given all my younger cousins copies of Madeleine L'Engle books for their libraries. That is one way I know of teaching them how to care about the past-present-future of the Universe.

From a Girl's Perspective

I know that this book is for guys, but I read Sex and the Single Guy for the following reasons:

1. I want to know what's going on guys' heads

2. I want to know how I can better protect my brothers in Christ

3. This book doesn't just deal with sexual sin, but gives guidelines for conquering sinful thoughts, protecting yourself from temptation, and surrendering yourself whole heartedly to God.

Godly, single perspectives on sexuality are rare; rarer still is a guy who will face the fact that even Christian men have problems with pornography, lust, etc., and declare boldly that as followers of Christ, Christian men need to conquer this and truly be different from the world.

Joe is sensitive and honest, baring his heart publicly and encouraging other single guys to join him in a war against sinful sexuality. Using the perspectives of guys and girls, and the often painful stories of both, Joe presents a powerful and convicting book.

Do I recommend this book to girls as well as to guys? Absolutely! It's not often that a Christian girl can read a book for men and come away feeling valued and hopeful that there truly are men who desire purity in their guy/girl relationships.

Daringly honest and Biblical

I know Joe Knable as a sincere, passionate friend. In his goal to be God-glorifying, he delivers Biblical answers to the spiritual dilemma I have faced for years in my own life. Joe points out that my flesh has already declared war on me, and he has challenged me in just the first few chapters to, once-and-for-all, declare war on my flesh. If you struggle with lust, it's time to join Joe Knable in declaring war! Paul urged Timothy to "flee youthful lusts," and Joe points us to the Biblical solution with utterly convicting honesty.

Knable writes from the real, down-to-earth perspective that connects with every guy desiring personal purity starting right now. An amazingly challenging book that gives men the right perspective on tough issues we deal with, and teaches us to love and respect women as our sisters.

Every man should read this - and women would gain plenty of insight from it as well!
