An outstanding study of the Covenant with Israel

For too long, we have lost sight of what the Law is really about. Since Martin Luther, people have started to view it as a means to personal salvation, rather that what it really intended. This book takes us back to what the Law really says to us, first by helping us understand the Exodus story, and how a new society was envisioned, in direct contrast to the Pharoah who enslaved the Hebrews. Then the author applies this to our lives and our situation. If we think about it, the Law calls us to a radical reordering of our government and all of our affairs. The ideas, such as total dept relief after 7 years, and concern for the marginalized have profound implications for our structuring of society today. This may be why we have chosen to ignore it for so long. What I really enjoy is how this is applied to the reign of God that Jesus also espoused. An excellent book! But be careful, it may forever change how you view government policy, and even vote!

This COULD be good as one's intro to Brueggemann

Although the first section moves just a little slow for the lay reader (he speaks of pyschological backgrounds in family relationships), the rest of the book is typical profundity as one would expect from Brueggemann.
In fact, this book is probbaly the most quotable Brueggemann to date (I've read about a dozen of his books).
Among the discussions: *The "dialectic" between PRAISE and COMPLAINT in the Christian life; *The concept of "othering" as the risky, demanding, dynamic process of relating to one who is not us; *Approaching God as EROS

This is a lifesaver!

Infertility is the worst. Not knowing if you will ever be a mom is heartbreaking. Sandi is able to capture all those fears perfectly and give you the hope you need to keep trying. I wish this book had been written 9 years ago! I handed this book to a dear friend today. She is in the midst of trying to conceive a sweet baby and is feeling a bit defeated. I am hoping that this book will affect her the same way and she will turn to it when she needs some encouragement. This is definitely a book to buy, read and share!

I can't express in words how much this amazing book helped me. I finally found someone who could relate with everything that comes along with the infertility journey. Sandi provides great words of wisdom that I use constantly to remind me that there is light at the end of the tunnel and staying positive is half the battle. A psychedelic masterpiece!!

Being an illustrator myself and a somewhat casual fan of underground comics, I had heard Jim Woodring's name mentioned several times with reverence and even caught a great interview with him on the Duncan Trussell Family Hour podcast, but I have to admit this is my first real exposure to his brilliant art. My wife and I were browsing in our local alternative bookstore and this immediately caught our eye and we couldn't put it down. We paid the cover price for it there ($22.99) and then I ran home and bought another one on Amazon (for around $16) to send to my brother for his birthday.

The art might not be for everybody, but it is brilliant and should be enjoyed by all with an open mind and appreciation of true craftsmanship. Jim Woodring is a cartoonist who draws upon personal and metaphysical experiences in his art and Frank is his signature character. Described by Woodring as a "generic anthropomorphic", he inhabits a surreal and sometimes terrifying world of absurdity known as the Unifactor. Woodring's drawing style and line quality are beautiful and unique and it's clear from the subject matter that he's no stranger to hallucinogens and not afraid of perturbing his, or your, consciousness.

The book consists of 27 separate tableaux, including the ones on the inner jacket, that have been painstakingly converted to 3D by Charles Barnard by cutting Woodring's drawings into 200-300 individual layers in Photoshop. As a fan of anaglyph 3D, I can say this is one of the best conversions I've ever seen. The illustrations really come to life when you put the glasses on and get drawn into Frank's world.

The pages of the book are very and sturdy, like a thick illustration board and as a result, my copy has warped a little bit, but I'd much rather have it like that than printed on thin paper. A pair of red/blue 3D glasses designed by Woodring are included and packed in a reusable, clear plastic envelope that tucks neatly into a window on the back page.

An excellent reference!

I used this book in my freshman calculus course quite some time ago, but found it very readable and well laid out. Since then I've gone back to grad school and am taking courses in mathematical physics and quantum mechanics. This book has been such an invaluable resource that I just bought another copy to replace the old one (which is totally falling apart!). It has been an essential tool for solving the grueling problem sets that have been assigned to me this semester.
Being that this is an old and out of print edition, I was able to buy it for next to nothing, which makes it even better!
Besides, calculus doesn't change, just the pretty pictures and graphs that get put into the calculus text books. Unless you need a certain book for a particular class, you'll be better off buying the 6th ed. of this book. It's much more affordable and has all the information as a $100 text...just less pictures.

Used this in college, ordered copy for nephew in college...

I used this textbook in my Calculus I & II classes, in college, back in 1983-4. I actually studied this textbook, outside of class, and with the study problems, with answers in the back of this book, I learned much of calculus on my own! I loaned it to my math teacher at a vocational school (dropped out of Engineering classes, went to vo-tech to become a Technician, instead -- still loving it!), and the teacher tried to order copies for her future classes! Loaned it to a fellow technician, on the job, years later, who told me he "collects" calculus textbooks -- he wanted a copy for himself, as well. To me, this is a great calculus text, if you have a solid understanding of Algebra. YMMV. Cheers!

Good technical key

This is an excellent key for trained botanists (or very knowledgable amateurs) who want to identify the flora of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the southeast United States. However, it is not a book for the untrained, casual observer of wildflowers. The dichotomous key is easy to follow, though I wished the habitat descriptions were more detailed. The lack of illustrations is distressing -- sometimes a picture IS worth a thousand words! However, I appreciate that illustrations are expensive and would have increased the size of the book. It is easily carried in the field -- always a plus.

Great taxonomic key

I used this key in college for two botany classes (a plant diversity class and a plant anatomy and physiology class). It is an excellent tool for identifying plants, but, as the other two reviews noted, it is probably not something you're going to use while walking through the woods as a casual plant-lover. There are no illustrations, and most of the keys require a good dissecting microscope or at least a hand lense to really get a good look at the anatomy of the plant. I would also recommend purchasing a good dictionary of plant terminology to use in conjunction with this. However, if you're looking for an excellent book of dichotomous keys for plants over much of the southeastern U.S., I don't know that there is a better one out there.

Excellent regional reference for vascular flora.

I'm in the Appalachian Mountains, up around northwest North Carolina. Thus far I've yet to find ANY endemic species not in this book. Provided you understand phylogenetic trees (it's a system for figuring out what you're looking at) and have a decent reference for scientist speak you've got the definitive guide.

This is not, however, a field guide. This is a very detailed scientific guide, there are several good field guides out there. If you are unfamiliar with scientific terminology regarding botany look into getting a book on plant taxonomy to go with it, the author Zack E. Murrell has one named 'Vascular Plant Taxonomy'.
