When the elephants have a special day, should the other animals be included or excluded? Elmer is a colorful patchwork elephant, first introduced by author and illustrator David McKee in 1989. Because Elmer is such a special elephant, all the other elephants celebrate Elmer's Day, when they decorate themselves and go on parade. However, as they prepare for the special day, they are excited and noisy. All the other animals, including the lion, the tiger, the monkeys, and even the rabbits, complain about the racket to Elmer. He asks the elephants to be quiet, and they agree, but it isn't long before they're noisier than ever. However, Elmer has an idea. What is his idea? And will it work?

Not only is this a fun and visually attractive book for youngsters to read, but it also contains the subtle message for kids that it is better to invite others to play with you than try to keep them shut out. David McKee published his first children's book in 1964, and since then he has been one of the leading contemporary children's book creators. A very fun book

Unlike most of the elephants in the jungle, Elmer is a brightly-colored patchwork elephant. And, one day a year, the other elephants would decorate themselves in bright colors and have a parade. They called it Elmer's Day. But, when the other animals complain about all of the noise that the elephants are making, Elmer has a wonderful idea and he invites the other animals to be part of the parade!

This is a very fun book - the patchwork elephant, the bright and silly looking colors that the animals paint themselves - and you have to love everything to do with elephants! Yeah, it's a very silly and very entertaining book, and one with a great message of including other in your fun. Two thumbs up for Elmer's Special Day!

Elmer an excellent elephant across curriculum

The Elmer stories provide the opportunity for many activities across curriculum, as well as provoke conversation about social issues that 5 and 6-year-olds need to understand. The text and pictures promote easy comprehension of story and are interesting. I encourage student teachers to consider using the series to create a thread of learning as many of the essential age-appropriate learning skills can be easily simplified or expanded upon, depending on the learner's needs. All-in-all, an excellent series of stories about a lovable character and his ability to "fit-in".

Georgia DeGangi, PhD, OTR, FAOTA, is a clinical psychologist and an occupational therapist in private practice at ITS (Integrated Therapy Services) for Children and Families, Inc., in Kensington, MD. She is the co-author of Effective Parenting for the Hard-to-Manage Child and has over 25 years of experience working with infants, children, and their families.

Marc Nemiroff, PhD, is co-chair of the Infant/Young Child Mental Health Training Program at the Washington School of Psychiatry in Washington, D.C. In his private practice, he specializes in the treatment of pre-school and early elementary grade children.

Excellent book for any therapist doing groups with kids or teens

This is a great book for therapists working in group with children or teens, especially those with developmental or social disabilities. The authors use actual group transcripts and comment on the group process. Is also just an interesting read. I highly recommend it.

Hierarchical matrices are an efficient framework for large-scale fully populated matrices arising, e.g., from the finite element discretization of solution operators of elliptic boundary value problems. In addition to storing such matrices, approximations of the usual matrix operations can be computed with logarithmic-linear complexity, which can be exploited to setup approximate preconditioners in an efficient and convenient way. Besides the algorithmic aspects of hierarchical matrices, the main aim of this book is to present their theoretical background. The book contains the existing approximation theory for elliptic problems including partial differential operators with nonsmooth coefficients.
Furthermore, it presents in full detail the adaptive cross approximation method for the efficient treatment of integral operators with non-local kernel functions.The theory is supported by many numerical experiments from real applications.
