Feel the Heat of the Sinai 1956

S.L.A. Marshall is probably best known for his book "Swift Sword," which chronicled the 1967 "Six Day War" between the Israelis and the Arabs. However, he wrote extensively as a reporter, a foreign correspondent and a writer. Among the best of his many books is "Sinai Victory," which chronicles the complicated 1956 Suez War (often also called The One Hundred Hour War) between Egypt and Israel with France, the UK, and others. Marshall focuses on the combat between the Egyptians and Israelis on the Sinai Peninsula.
Marshall traveled to Israel and spent time with the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) at training, peacetime, and then war in 1956. His accounts are authentic and actual observations. Being a Western reporter at one time an official US Army reporter, Marshall has some very revealing and lucid observations of the Israeli army. He was given very free reign to interview Israeli commanders, troops, and others to make his determination how an inferior outnumbered Israeli army could defeat the massive forces of a nation like Egypt in so short a period of time. His comments on training and operational techniques are an excellent case study of desert warfare and still hold lessons for today's militaries in the Middle East (including the US and UK militaries in Iraq 2003).
The book is a hardback edition and features no photographs other than those on the dust jacket. However, Marshall included many hand drawn maps and illustrations inside, which are extremely cogent. Some of the information I have found in no other reference and is uniquely valuable. The three appendices cover training in the IDF, the air battle in 1956, and an outline and chronology of the war as well as an extremely useful index.
A small side note that I highly appreciated regards "Parker's Memorial," a large monument, which marks the Mitla Pass. It is actually a monument to Col. A.C. Palmer, DSO, and a British officer from earlier times. However, it was erroneously called "Parker's Memorial" so many times that the name has remained in most histories of the area.
While "Sinai Victory" is nonfiction and fact, I also highly recommend the historical fiction novel "Mitla Pass" by Leon Uris for more background on the 1956 Suez War.
This book is an outstanding reference to anyone studying the 1956 Suez War. Its' information would be useful to historians, wargamers, and anyone else interested in the topic.

I highly recommend "Sinai Victory" to anyone wanting to learn more about the 1956 Suez War.

Israel defeats Egypt in the Sinai in 1956.

Marshall is an Army historian who has written several good books about America's battles in WWI and Korea. In this book, he writes about Israel's small army taking on the Egyptians during the Suez crisis. The Israeli Army manages to take over the Sinai from the Egyptians. In the book, a heroic Ariel Sharon makes his appearance in one of the central battles for control of the Sinai. All of the battles are covered in this 100 hour war. Marshall details the tactics the Israeli Army used in defeating the Egyptians. Also covered is how the Israeli Army is made up, the training required, and the role of women.
What is not covered in this book is the Egyptian perspective, and what the effects of the war were. This angle was not covered, and one wonders what the reader is missing from this perspective. I have read more thrilling combat history than that covered in this book.

Get ready to get honest with your money....

To those who give it less than 3 stars: Really? This book contains more guidelines with regard to personal finance than most people get in their lifetime! The format was meant to be simplistic for those who didn't get degrees in finance. This is a great tool for getting yourself in financial order and asks the questions we may ask ourselves but are too afraid to ask others. I think the exercises that are given help you to get honest views about your financial past, present and future. A good rating is based on the content and usability not "oh I've been there done that so it is meh". If this is you then do something kind an pay the book forward to someone who could really use it to get to your level. There is no getting rich quick and this is a forward thinking, realistic approach to managing finances, savings and fun! I think this is a great tool for young people starting in high school all the way up to middle aged folks who need a financial check-in (or check up!).

Practical and very helpful

After listening to Alexa on the radio, i decided to purchase her book. This is a well-written book which is a practical guide to financial planning. I gave this book to each of my adult children this past Christmas. As a mom, I failed to teach my children about finances...so this was my way of admitting that to them - and giving them a big boost in understanding how to financially plan for their future.

Extravagant claims for a 'basic' book

In my opinion, the description for this "basic" ebook makes extravagant claims about what a reader would get from the book.
The book gives the impression that it is a first draft. It is riddled with spelling mistakes. Chord names have been placed so high above the staff that they often merge with the text above them, making them difficult or impossible to read. The sequence of topics is puzzling. For example, the topic on 'keys' is placed after the topics on 'chords', 'chord progressions' and even 'modulation'.
While the book is generally quite easy to read, there are places where I had to read a section a number of times to work out what the author was 'getting at'. For example, the topic on the "Circle of Functional V7-I" begins with these sentences: "Think of C as the I chord. Next think of it as a V7. As a V7 chord it must resolve to F because F is the I of C and the purpose of every V7 chord is to resolve to a I chord." ["because F is the I of C" ?? - what the author means here, is that the function of a chord depends on the key one is in. For example, in C Major a C chord functions as an I chord. However, in F Major a C chord functions as a V chord. So, a C chord followed by an F chord can be viewed as a V-I progression in F Major. Next, an F chord can be viewed as a V chord in Bb major etc. Continue in this way and you end up with a circle of V-I (or V7-I) chords in every key.]
One of the repeated statements is: "Functional Tonal Harmony demands that a chord be either Tonic or Dominant" (I or V). The author briefly explains why he views chords as reducible to either 'tonic' or 'dominant' (with the exception of the diminished chord) - this is not the usual way chords are viewed. The author further states that the diminished chord has no root - technically, a diminished chord has more than one possible root.
The book covers numerous topics which are very briefly described. The "Table of Contents" lists 65 topics (averaging a bit over a page per topic - and this includes the music examples, some of which take up one or more pages). Many of the topics covered would take up whole chapters in a typical harmony textbook. Some of the topics covered are usually excluded in basic harmony texts because they are considered to be too advanced. I think a beginner would struggle with some of the content of the book - due to superficial coverage of the topics.
On the positive side, the book provides a different way of looking at chords, is inexpensive and there are relatively few pages to read.

Generally good technical information. A bit of emphasis on "older style" electromechanical relays used for power system protection, but the principles are universal, and still apply to modern numerical relays. A very good choice for anyone who works "in the field."

An outstanding study of the Covenant with Israel

For too long, we have lost sight of what the Law is really about. Since Martin Luther, people have started to view it as a means to personal salvation, rather that what it really intended. This book takes us back to what the Law really says to us, first by helping us understand the Exodus story, and how a new society was envisioned, in direct contrast to the Pharoah who enslaved the Hebrews. Then the author applies this to our lives and our situation. If we think about it, the Law calls us to a radical reordering of our government and all of our affairs. The ideas, such as total dept relief after 7 years, and concern for the marginalized have profound implications for our structuring of society today. This may be why we have chosen to ignore it for so long. What I really enjoy is how this is applied to the reign of God that Jesus also espoused. An excellent book! But be careful, it may forever change how you view government policy, and even vote!

This COULD be good as one's intro to Brueggemann

Although the first section moves just a little slow for the lay reader (he speaks of pyschological backgrounds in family relationships), the rest of the book is typical profundity as one would expect from Brueggemann.
In fact, this book is probbaly the most quotable Brueggemann to date (I've read about a dozen of his books).
Among the discussions: *The "dialectic" between PRAISE and COMPLAINT in the Christian life; *The concept of "othering" as the risky, demanding, dynamic process of relating to one who is not us; *Approaching God as EROS
