Dick DeVenzio gave his life to sports and to the pursuit of excellence. The son of a successful basketball coach, Dick grew up wanting to be a basketball star.�He was named best high-school point guard in America by Parade magazine and went on to earn Academic All-American and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) all-star honors at Duke. Considered by many to be a basketball genius, Dick’s writings have inspired countless coaches and athletes. He died in 2001 at age 52.

About the Author
Dr. Scott Patten obtained an MD from the University of Alberta in 1986, and subsequently completed an FRCPC in psychiatry (1991) and a PhD in epidemiology (1994) at the University of Calgary. He is a professor in the department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary and is a senior health scholar with Alberta Innovates, Health Solutions. He has over 20 years experience teaching epidemiology and supervising graduate students. As a researcher, he has published more than 400 scientific papers and is the editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry.

I am finishing my master's degree in health science and epidemiology - a meta-analysis dissertation accomplished - and I can say this is in fact an excellent book. It may be the best introductory textbook about clinical epidemiology, particularly for those interested in its Canadian issues. It fits very well on the shelf with great books of the field such as Guyatt's Users' Guides to the Medical Literature and Woodward's Epidemiology.

About the Author

Dr. Clarence W. de Silva is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He earned his PhDs from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1978) and the University of Cambridge, England (1998), and an honorary DEng from the University of Waterloo (2008). He has published and edited numerous books, chapters, journal articles, and conference papers. His recent books include Mechanics of Materials (Taylor & Francis/CRC, 2014), Mechatronics―A Foundation Course (Taylor & Francis/CRC, 2010); Modeling and Control of Engineering Systems (Taylor & Francis/CRC, 2009); and Sensors and Actuators: Control System Instrumentation (Taylor & Francis/CRC, 2007).

Too many formula errors!

This book was a required text for an instrumentation class. My proffesor's endorsement actually graces the back of the book, which makes me question his competency.

The reason for two stars is the amount of errors. There are so many errors, that I distrust any formula. The only positive out of this book is that I've become quite good at analyzing the circuits to confirm the validity of his formulas.

I regretfully purchased this book from my University's book store which has a two week return period, so now I'll be lucky to receive $50 at book buy-back time.
