Entertaining, Suspenseful, and Engaging. What More Could You Want?

The goal for writing the Boxcar Children Mystery titles was to encourage young children to read. It must work because DECADES after my first time reading the first Boxcar Children book I still remember details from it. I am reading a stack of the Mystery titles to revisit my childhood and I enjoy them as much now.

They are entertaining, suspenseful and engaging. What more could you want in young adult literature? Well, you could want to learn facts about something in particular. Well, the titles do just that, too. 'The Hidden Beach' enlightens readers about facts on marine biology and coral, especially.
It takes hundreds of years for coral to regrow.

The mystery series keeps almost every character under suspicion to the point of rivaling Columbo.

I am using this book in my English as a Second Language class and the reading level is good, the different words to identify meanings with is challenging enough to start. The content is interesting enough to keep this part of the class from getting boring.

Healthy, appetizing, creative and easy

I have tried many of the recipes in this book and so far, have loved them all. As a runner, I like the before and the recovery recipes. I use the homemade gels for during and many of the during exercise recipes for hiking and biking. I have found that many of the recipes can be frozen in batches, which is very convenient for my schedule. I just make big batches over the weekend a freeze. This is probably my favorite athlete recipe book. They are easy and I love the creative combination of food for a healthy, and appetizing, meal or snack. Mr. Kadey...I am now waiting for a full meal version cookbook.

Like his debut novel, Funny Money is distinguished by Swain's knowledge of gambling scams from card counting to the judicious application of a "monkey's paw" on a slot machine. Less even is this book's character development. Valentine is expertly drawn, and the relationship between him and his late-blooming son is both convincing and heartwarming. But some secondary players are about as thinly realized as a poker chip, and Swain's too-convenient use of violence as a plot propellant threatens to undermine his story's credibility. "Funny Money" = A Royal Flush!!!

Retired Atlantic City cop Tony Valentine runs a consulting business called "Grift Sense," an old gambling expression which means "that you not only know how to do the moves, you also know when to do them." He is a pro at reading people, and can feel "when a hustle is going down, even if he doesn't know exactly what it is." Sixty-two year-old Valentine is one of the most refreshingly original characters to enter the world of sleuth fiction in a long time. This senior is as smart as he is sexy - and he is sexy, trust me! He made his debut in James Swain's "Grift Sense." "Funny Money," book two in the series, has our hero back home in Atlantic City....for a funeral, unfortunately. Doyle Flannigan, Tony's best friend and former partner was murdered, literally blown away, while investigating a casino scam.

Right before his death, Doyle phoned Tony at his home in Florida to discuss a $6 million dollar con he was investigating at the Bombay Casino in Atlantic City. The Bombay is owned by their longtime acquaintance Archie Tanner, one of the richest men in NJ, and a "mean, foul-mouthed thug." No one likes this guy, including his employees. In the middle of their telephone conversation, a bomb explodes, causing Doyle's demise. Tony hears it all, courtesy of AT&T. Needless to say, our man is out for blood - Bigtime! He's hops a plane, pointed north, to attend the funeral, comfort Liddy, Doyle's wife, and bring Valentine-style justice to those who killed his best buddy. He also plans to hunt down the hustlers who are ripping-off the Bombay. To further complicate his life, black sheep son Gerry, a bookie who manipulated his father into setting him up in business, is being pursued by the Mob. Yolanda, Gerry's fiance, is expecting, which will make Tony a grandfather. And an attempt is made on Valentine's life. It's not the first...and it won't be the last!

Swain's narrative is well written, fast paced and filled with suspense and humor. His inside take on the gambling industry, the rough and tumble world of gaming, a wide variety of the grifts/scams/hustles committed, the view from the catwalk and other surveillance measures are fascinating. His characters are wonderfully quirky, like friend, neighbor, and new Grift Sense employee Mabel Struck, who runs daily anonymous classifieds in the St. Petersburg Times, to the delight of area subscribers. Kat Berman is new on the scene. She's a foxy, zaftig female wrestler who becomes Tony's love interest. The reader is also introduced to Master Yun, his judo teacher, and to Dr. Peter Diamondis, a Princeton professor, head of the Probability Department, and author of "The Devil's Playthings, A Mathematical Examination of Riffle Shuffles, their Cycles and Decents."

James Swain, is supposedly one of the best card-handlers around, a gambling expert and a professional magician. So he knows his subject matter well. He has written a most entertaining mystery full of schemes, scams and surprises. You won't be able to put this one down.

The Casino is Open - Enjoy!

There is nothing funny to Tony Valentine about the murder of his best friend and ex-partner, Doyle Flanagan. Valentine, an ex-cop and a majestro at figuring out the various scams of those who try to rip off the casinos of the world is called upon in the second of James Swain's books about Valentine to try and unravel one of the most complicated deceptions that he has yet encountered. In doing so, he finds himself involved in some of the funniest and scariest escapades of his 62 year old life and the reader is taken further into the mind, dreams and hopes of this most entertaining "hero."

Swain's stories about the seamy underside of the gambling business continue to deserve our attention and it is really better if you find out for yourself what he has in store for us. I assure you that if you enjoy this type of genre, you will enjoy the journey. I did.

Hugely entertaining

Swain's Grift Sense was pure pleasure and, happily, he's followed up with a royal flush. The writing is lean, the characters are fully developed (even the dog) and hero Valentine is a believable and sympathetic fellow. Any book that entertains as well as informs is one well worth the cover price. The author's seemingly limitless knowledge of gambling scams makes for fascinating reading. Add to this a hero of sixty-two with a sense of chivalry and a good heart, as well as a fully functioning conscience, and you've got a solid series working. From white-haired neighbor Mabel who takes to her new job as Tony's assistant with believable mental agility to wrestler-love interest Kat, to a trio of hapless inept thugs, the entertainment factor is one hundred percent. Superior plotting skill and great narrative drive make Swain someone to watch.
Very highly recommended.

A good article, a bad book

If you're like me, you were recommended this book by Tai Lopez. If that's the case, why are you reading reviews? (I.e., don't listen to just anyone.)

This "book" isn't actually a book. It's a reprinting of an article published in Harvard Business Review January 2005, which I realized I had laying around the house! I read that first, then when I opened this book was rather shocked to realize it was an exact reprint stretched from 10 magazine pages to 50 in 24+ pt font size.

Frankly, this book isn't a book by the standards you probably have. As other reviewers have lamented, Drucker mentions something important then just moves on, giving no steps on how to go about figuring it out. What you get is a barebones explication of managing oneself, and it has a few good insights. The semantic point aside---that it shouldn't be called a book---you will probably learn a few pointers about managing oneself. But you will be greatly disappointed if you expect there to be much more than an outline of what you should do in general.

Here's what it covers:
What are my strengths?
How do I perform?
What are my values?
Where do I belong?
What should I contribute?
Responsibility for relationships
The second half of your life

You'll notice that they are mostly questions. The article really seems to just be a (guided) impetus to think about certain important things in your life. The shortness of the book is really a reflection that YOU have to do the work of figuring out the answers.

A book you give to the whole family or office

Managing Oneself is a short, sweet and straight to the point pamphlet. Per the title, It discusses how one should know their strengths and capitalize on it. One very useful piece of advice Peter Drucker offers is understanding how you learn. Are you a reader or are you a an active listener? He goes on to explain how you can be successful in any endeavor if you simply know how you learn. Drucker gives examples of past presidents that failed woth reporters because they were listening to a set of questions when they should have been reading them beforehand. This was my first Harvard Business Review book and I will definitely purchase more works by them. All in all, very good read and a book you will give to your inner circle.

Those women courageous enough to press charges or to speak publicly about their experiences were attacked in the media, on Grizzly football fan sites, and/or to their faces. The university expelled three of the accused rapists, but one was reinstated by state officials in a secret proceeding. One district attorney testified for an alleged rapist at his university hearing. She later left the prosecutor’s office and successfully defended the Grizzlies’ star quarterback in his rape trial. The horror of being raped, in each woman’s case, was magnified by the mechanics of the justice system and the reaction of the community.

All Too Timely

Jon Krakauer's dissection of the epidemic of sexual assault that has taken place in Missoula (and in many other university towns across America) may leave you angry and sad. No phony resolution is offered; instead, we get a careful report on a series of assaults, their effects on the victims, and the maddeningly ineffective response by the university and law enforcement community.

Well written compelling story.

A sad commentary on power and apathy on the part of university officials, city police and the "good ole boy"network in Missoula, MT when a series of rapes committed on university women by university football players goes mostly unheeded. Well written, compelling. Jon Krakauer has done an excellent job on this story. It makes one wonder how many other university towns across America are hiding their dirty secrets under the rug. As a mother, grandmother and long ago college student myself, it is infuriating to think that in 21st century America women are still having to fight for justice and equality.

Drink an alcoholic drink like you drink any other drink

This book should be required reading for every high school kid and again in college. Young men and women must understand the dangers of alcohol, partying, and presuming the company they keep will respect their boundaries. These first experiences have the ability to impact a young life forever, for the victim and perpetrator. Where do we teach kids that binge drinking is ok? Drink an alcoholic drink like you drink any other drink, in moderation. You don't get a pass for being drunk if you are the victim or the perpetrator.
Such a good book. Jon Krakauer is the best.
Shame on the University of Montana and every other school who does not take a victim seriously.

This book was absolutely fantastic. John proves his love for Savannah in the end. This is true love that's rarely experienced. I saw the movie but the book was much more descriptive. Ordered Nicholas Sparks complete collection and can't wait to receive them! Definitely a thumbs up!!
