Excellent YA novel about love, family, respect, loyalty and queerness

I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I started Girl Mans Up, and as the story unfolded, I kept being unsure, in a good way. Girard does an excellent job of keeping the reader guessing while also taking us deeply into family dynamics, complicated friendships, new love and navigating queerness on multiple levels. I don't play video games save for Wii ones, while Pen, the protagonist of Girl Mans Up, is a fierce gamer. She's pretty much considered one of the guys among her guy friends, which is how she likes it. But when she starts to realize that maybe some of her friendships aren't based on loyalty (the same concept being drilled into her at home by her tough Portuguese parents, who insist she pay respeito to them), but rather on not so subtle coercive tactics, she starts to question who she should ally herself with. She also falls in love after many unrequited crushes on girls, and all of these subjects, as well as abortion, are dealt with realistically. There are no stock characters here, no easy answers about gender, sex, family or love. Instead, there's a lot of tough choices, like whether to stay at home where she feels misunderstood or move in with her older brother Johnny, who she idolizes. Pen isn't a perfect character, but even when she makes mistakes, she's likable because Girard has imbued her with so much heart. She sticks to her guns and insists on a gender presentation and identity that is her own, not what other people want to make her into or what would be supposedly "easier" for the world to understand. And while the book is not "about" abortion, its treatment of the subject as highly personal, confusing and often lonely is dealt with exquisitely here, by making it both a fact of life but not something the character contemplating it takes at all lightly.

Not having been a teenager for almost twenty years, I can still find a lot of truth in this story. I think Pen might be the truest literary character I have ever encountered. By that I mean closest to my sense of identity. The story is just like Pen, soft and tender, and rough and tough. I love the portrayal of the mother's desperate dilemma of her own aspirations and her love for her daughter, the hard path of finding out there is more than one preordained way to do the right thing with your kids. Highly recommended for youth and adults.

My entire family loves this book

I absolutely loved this book. I wish there were more fully realized novels dealing with gender and society's rigidness regarding gender. What this book accomplishes, I've not seen before. Pen (great name), n�e Penelope, pushes the boundaries of other people's expectations regarding gender, just while being her own, unique, cool self. Pen is not struggling with "figuring out" who she's is, but is struggling with how to deal with others' reactions to her. As a mother of a somewhat similar young kid, Pen represents to me a truly gorgeous role model for my daughter, unapologetic for being her own person, true to her own permutation of gender, trying to be her best self while shedding those who can't just love her for who she is.

Easy to understand

I need this book for my capstone class and it is very good. There is a comprehensive case study at the beginning and then the book goes into more detail about the components of the case study. I'll admit I was a skeptic regarding deer calling. For years Gary told me I was missing out on a whole dimension of the sport. Finally, I read his articles on deer calling and gave it a try. I was amazed at how this champion deer caller's techniques can actually influence the movement & activity of deer. It makes the sport more proactive: Not just just passively sitting around in your tree, hoping a deer will walk by. I now agree with something he once said, "if this deer call weighed 50 pounds, I still wouldn't go in the woods without it" :o). Jack Kerouac, Scattered Poems (City Lights, 1971)

Over the few years Kerouac wrote, he dashed off a number of poems that managed never to get collected, many of them in letters to Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady. City Lights, with help from Ginsberg, compiled a small volume of these poems and released them some thirty years ago.

While a few of the works here (and, in some cases, a line or two within one of the works) shows the power and natural affinity for language that makes Kerouac one of the enduring figures of American literature, Most of what's here is solid evidence that, where uncollected poems are concerned, there's usually a reason why they weren't published in the first place. Perhaps it is the prominence of the author in question, but while reading most of this work, I got a sense of hopelessness, a pathetic (in the classic definition of the term) feeling of emptiness. Unlike both the surrealism and the jazz from which Kerouac and his fellow Beats drew their inspiration, and also unlike the authors
from that time who have been incorrectly labelled as Beats (Bukowski, Alfred Chester, to an extent Paul Bowles, etc.), Kerouac's material seems to lack either the underlying meaning or the sense of immediate purpose that separates the best of the aforementioned authors from their scads of less talented imitators.

One place in which Kerouac does shine here, though, is in a small selection of haiku at the end of the book. Kerouac was one of the first American authors to really grasp the spirit of English-language haiku, as mentioned in a brief intro to the book's last section. Kerouac quotes a few Basho haiku and bemoans the inability of English to imitate the free-flowing Japanese language, coming to the conclusion that the "seventeen syllable" rule should be dropped for American haiku (as most serious haiku writers and scholars in English have also done in the forty or so years since Kerouac originally composed the works here). In the haiku, where Kerouac is forced to work with tight lines and spare images, his gift comes through. Unfortunately, it does so in far too few other pieces in this book. **

Kerouac at the brink of the world

There are few times in the history of mankind that we can sit back and allow ourselves to be manipulated by a pure mad man (brilliant writer). Kerouac's poems allow the mind to travel to the brink of truth and reality and come back unharmed and ... enlightened ... Thank God for kerouac ... he makes the world a better place and his poems are subconcious unfiltered visions of real life. "Pull My Daisy" with Ginsberg is a masterpiece as is "Old Angel Midnight". here is one poem : TO EDWARD DAHLBERG
Don't use the telephone. People are never ready to answer it. Use Poetry.
And Jack Kerouac does use poetry ... he uses it to give insight into a world he knew so well.

Jack Kerouac "Scattered Poems"

I was happy to finally find a collection of Kerouac's poetry! I know his poems are out there, but they are hard to come by, at times. I have always had some admiration for artists of the beatnik movement. I decided to teach a mini-unit on the beat poets for a high school course; having a nice collection of poems as examples was key to the unit. This particular collection of Kerouac poems included some of his "Western haikus," which illustrated Kerouac's non-conformity in writing. Excellent little book to have!

A good craftsman "knows" how to create the objects of his craft. Because he is creating the objects there can be no rational basis for the object until it is created. That is prescience, versus academic science masquerading as omniscience.

For example, a mechanic knows his tools and by simply looking at them he can choose them by size and shape. A 1/4-28 screw versus 10-32 screw are identified without rational knowledge or a measuring device. A 3/8 inch open end wrench versus a 10 mm open end wrench are known subliminally by a master mechanic.

The clear fact of the ancient humans is that they occupied most of the Earth. There would have been craftsmen that learned how to use stars as guides to travelers. These craftsmen could etch lines to carry engineering information and the artifacts could be employed to teach the craft.

The use of a talisman like device is what Cunningham does. Then he applies the results to his vast knowledge to "calibrate" the result. In his case he wraps three Mercator star maps on one Mercator Earth map. The result is a huge number of correlations to Ancient Sacred Sites on Earth. Given that the ancients traveled the Earth for over 400,000 years, it would be extremely unlikely not to find sacred sites used for traveling around the Earth. Think of them as train stations. But, Cunningham is bucking a stiff head wind from academic archaeologists because few of them could find the pole star, much less the zenith stars at a hundred sacred sites between Scotland and South Africa.

Assume that the ancient hominids navigated the Earth, as their remains guarantee. Then apply celestial craftsmanship as the means to navigate. A good navigator would know the whole sky using less than a thousand stars. All he would need is an excellent memory for star patterns and then simply travel to the stars overhead at each destination. It is no more complicated than being a professional golfer. The flag guides armatures. But, there are few Tiger Woods in any culture that can guide a ball into the cup holding the flag from five hundred yards away in four shots or less. Those few were the ancient tour guides whose artifacts caught Cunningham's attention.

You will probably have to read the book twice because Cunningham draws you through the 400,000 year long journey in flashes of amazement like the windows on a bullet train.

That is how to begin Cunningham's amazing presentation. Where it takes you is mind boggling. He verifies the ancient adage, "as above, so below." Although he does not say it, his book validates the Science of Religion and exposes the Religion of Science. The subject is the Earth as it is in the Heavens. Both were sacred to our most distant ancestors. Cunningham has restored the Sacred Places as stops along Sacred Routes.

Poorly organized and presented.

Currently reading this, and I'm struggling to get through it. The book is rife with grammatical errors. The author cannot seem to consistently spell names or locations - pick a spelling and stick with it, please. Names are important! Rather than citing specific evidence in support of his claims, the author is given to using in-line references along the lines of, "See the works of so-and-so for details." Dude, I'm not going to read ALL the works of so-and-so to support your argument! In the end I have to second another reviewer's voice on this book - there are many conclusions that are fallacious, and the material is poorly organized and presented.

The thing is, I *want* to like this book, as the star-map premise sounds really neat. However, the author does a very poor job of explaining how to construct the star map. How about your SHOW it, step by step, transform by transform? I'm reading the Kindle edition, so it may just be that illustrations and figures aren't as nice on Kindle. But ultimately, it's the author's job to explain, and it's the author who chooses how to distribute his work. At the end of the day, the star map is the whole premise of the book, and if I can't understand how it's put together, then I can't understand your book. There isn't even a pointer to an online resource describing how to make the world star map.

Illogical and poorly organized premise.

Another rehash of "deep" archaeology, unsupported by consistent facts. Namely that nearly half a million years ago ancient man discovered a myriad of astronomical data (some only "re" discovered by modern people within the last couple of hundred years.) Cunningham tries to support an argument that the ancients shared this information by word of mouth up until 1000 AD - when suddenly everyone from Chinese sages to Polynesian sailors mysteriously forgot to tell the next generation!
This leaves Cunningham to decipher a variety of pictographic evidence that he claims reveals this ancient knowledge, and enlighten the rest of us.
Don't waste your money with this stuff.
(PS. This is (apparently) not the first time he's published this same premise. And he appears to review his own work on various websites.)

Regina Pustet, born in 1963, Ph.D. in General Linguistics in 1991 (University of Cologne) is currently teaching at the University of Munich. Her previous research activities focus on various aspects of functional-typological language theory, such as case marking and lexical categorization, and also include descriptive work especially on Native American languages.
