In Green Nature/Human Nature, Charles A. Lewis describes the psychological, sociological and physiological responses of people to vegetation in cities and forests, as well as in horticultural therapy programs in hospitals, geriatric institutions, physical rehabilittion centers, drug rehabilitation programs and correctional institutions. He presents an evolutionary basis for the human attraction to plants. People-plant interactions are presented from two perspectives: participatory, in which the individual is involved in planting and maintaining the vegetation, and observational, in which the individual bears no responsibility for establishing or maintaining the vegetation.

In what amounts to a straighforward catalog of well-documented and tangible benefits, Lewis brings the latest and best research into plant/human interaction to bear on questions of how green nature is intertwined with the human psyche and how that interaction can lead to enhanced well-being and an appreciation of the human dimension in environmental concerns.

About the Author
Charles A. Lewis was graduated from the University of Maryland, received his MS from Cornell University and has worked as a plant breeder, garden center operator, and director of the former Sterling Forest Gardens in Tuxedo, New York. He was Horticulturist, Administrator of Collections, and Research Fellow at the Morton Arboretun in Lisle, Illinois. His work in people/plant interactions has been honored by such organizations as the American Horticulture Society, American Horticultural Therapy Association, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Swarthmore College, American Association of Botanical Garden and Arboreta, New York City Housing Authority, Chicago housing Authority and the People Plant Council. He now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico and consults on people/plant interactions. He has published widely in professional journals and popular magazines and newspapers.

Interesting story but my expectations were higher, I was somehow expecting to read more of a scientific study,
it is a nice and easy read of one person's life journey through social work with gardening as a tool to heal, unite people & communities.
From that aspect, social work and gardening, it is a success story I must admit.

A Gardener's Must Read!

Charles Lewis is the undisputed champion of people-plant relationships. A learned man, well-versed in all aspects of horticulture, Lewis is also an excellent writer. Lewis asks: "In what ways do plants enter our mental and spiritual lives?" What exactly is the importance of cultivating our own "inner garden." Gardens grow persons, not just plants. Lewis found that to pursue his interest in the human side of horticulture he had to look to other disciplines - psychology, sociology, geography, and medicine. Charles Lewis's Green Nature/ Human Nature is a must read for anyone who loves to garden. "Horticultural Therapy for the Soul" perhaps describes this book, but actually it is more. I find it an incredible resource, citing research on community gardens, horticultural therapy, the deep and enduring relationship between people and plants. An excellent study on cranial osteopathy

This book is an excellent combination of both a thorough review of cranial osteopathy and a detailed study of the application of cranial osteopathy to the care of infants and children. The illustrations and pictures are plentiful and helpful. It is clearly written by someone with years of practice treating children with cranial osteopathy. The author's remarks in the treatment sections are particularly helpful. This is more than a textbook. It is a text plus many seminars worth of information collected into a single very practical book.

About the Author
Howard Abadinsky is professor of criminal justice at St. John's University. A graduate of Queens College of the City University of New York, he has a PhD in sociology from New York University. Prior to entering academia, he was a New York State Parole Officer and Senior Parole Officer and a Cook County, Illinois, Deputy Sheriff/Inspector. He was a consultant to the President's Commission on Organized Crime and founder of the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime. Dr. Abadinsky is the author of several books, including THE CRIMINAL ELITE: ORGANIZED AND PROFESSIONAL CRIME; PROBATION AND PAROLE: THEORY AND PRACTICE; DRUG USE AND ABUSE; and LAW, COURTS, AND JUSTICE IN AMERICA.

A Wikipedia article on these topics would be more exciting than this book. The author acts as a clearinghouse to pull together facts from a zillion different sources, but does not attempt to do anything more. As a result, you get a bland book (even by textbook standards!) that reads more like a laundry list of pull quotes and footnote citations than an authoritative book on the subject.

Sapolsky keeps going: How was that behavior influenced by structural changes in the nervous system over the preceding months, by that person's adolescence, childhood, fetal life, and then back to his or her genetic makeup? Finally, he expands the view to encompass factors larger than one individual. How did culture shape that individual's group, what ecological factors millennia old formed that culture? And on and on, back to evolutionary factors millions of years old.�

The result is one of the most dazzling tours d'horizon of the science of human behavior ever attempted, a majestic synthesis that harvests cutting-edge research across a range of disciplines to provide a subtle and nuanced perspective on why we ultimately do the things we do...for good and for ill. Sapolsky builds on this understanding to wrestle with some of our deepest and thorniest questions relating to tribalism and xenophobia, hierarchy and competition, morality and free will, and war and peace. Great CD set and terrific information!

This CD set arrived when I expected, in perfect condition. Bruce Lipton is the perfect reader of his own innovative work exploring the way cells take in and process environmental information, and then activate the cell functions accordingly. It looks like (on a cellular level) environment is more important than genetics, which then frees us to change our physical and psychological conditions by changing those environmental conditions and how we respond to them.

Long and very technical

This should be a college class. The author is a college prof. who must think those who listen to these disks have a college level interest. I was hoping for more suggestions on how to use the information for a better "life". Haven't finished all the disks yet, so perhaps there is more to come, but it is MANY hours of way more information than I need about cell make-up and so far not enough about what to do with that info.
