Improvising Better lives up to its name

Improvising Better is a must have for anyone who wants to do just that. I'm currently in my fourth year of doing improvisational comedy, and my biggest regret is that I didn't buy this book earlier! This work will leave you saying, "Well of course. Why didn't I think of that?" Written in a conversational tone, it will fool you into believing that Jimmy and Liz are actually in the room fixing your improv flaws. This book can be read in just a couple of hours, but it is through rereading it that it gains most of its value. It is a must-have improvisational reference work.
If you're looking for a quick fix to almost any of your improv problems this is the book for you. Almost every chapter has a handful of games that will help you hone your improv skills and make you more ready to take on the stage. It's simply amazing how much knowledge can be shared in so few pages. The coauthors share over 30 years of experience in this field. Does anything else really need to be said?

Now that you know how to improvise...

I have had the luxury of being coached by Liz Allen. But for those that have not had the opportunity, she and her co-author have come up with a fun tongue-in-cheek book that gives the more seasoned improviser a chance to reasses their path and how to make their improv work even better.

The book really paints a picture of what the improviser faces both socially and professionally. It reviews the basic improvisational tools, something the seasoned professional sometimes forgets about. And, the text is not dry at all. Bits of humor are thrown in that keep it an interesting read.

If you are wanting a diversion from your chaotic improv life, check out this book and see the culture of comedic improv mirrored humorously within the pages of this fun title! And get many helpful performance hints as well!

Great book - wish they had thought about more about examples

I wish I could give this book a 4.5 stars - for the most part, I really liked the book and what it had to say. It's a quick read and easy to understand - 18 chapters (although each one is like 1-2 pages) outline common pitfalls students of improv theatre have. Chapters include: What Happened to Yes?, You are Required to Play the Opposite Sex, Choosing the Funny over the Craft, and Yes Begins Offstage. My only complaint is that while 80-85% of the book would be appropriate for high school students, some of the examples of scenes and some of the language and the Chapter on Fear of Playing Politically Incorrect Characters made the book unusable for me as a school textbook for my Improv Classes- which is a shame, because there is so much great information in the book. I realize they were writing this book for adults and in that sense it's great. I just wish there was an improv book like this geared for the high school improv student who is not quite yet "professional" and yet not like some of the other books I've seen geared (or at least marketed) towards the age group - too babyish. If you are teaching college or above this might be the book for you - otherwise this is a good resource for teachers, but can not be handed out as a textbook.

About the Author
The works of Derek Kidner (MA, Christ's College, Cambridge) are full of the marks of both professor and pastor with his even�handed scholarship as well as his devotional insight. These qualities have made his commentaries in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary series and The Bible Speaks Today series some of the most beloved and popular of recent decades. Kidner had a long career in both the church and the academy in England. He studied at Cambridge University and then served in the ministry for several years before becoming a senior tutor at Oak Hill Theological College. Kidner began his writing career while serving as warden of Tyndale House in Cambridge from 1964 to 1978, publishing his ninth and final book, The Message of Jeremiah, in 1987.

A great place to start

I bought this commentary on a recommendation from C.J. Mahaney video I watched on line. What makes the book worth the money is the introduction. The introduction exposed me to categories and descriptions of these categories that made the book hugely edifying. It's very short, as I believe most commentaries in this series are. You won't get a huge exposition of every word or syntactical expression, rather you'll get the thrust of a passage or section of passages. If you're a laymen (like me) and not a pastor, I would whole-heartedly say start here.

Okay But Too Brief for An Expositor

Kidner is a true scholar, and his commentaries on the Psalms have become a classic. With Proverbs, he does comment on each verse (which makes this better than most supposed "commentaries" on Proverbs), but his comments are very, very brief and thus do not get into the text deeply (as Bridges does). This is a good work to own if you already possess some more thorough treatments. For a layman just wanting to get the basic flow of the proverbs, this would be a fine book. If you want to do a deeper study in Proverbs, this will help you in a limited way only.

Kidner is a great commentator and is notorious for his brevity

Kidner is a great commentator and is notorious for his brevity. That said, this was not his best commentary in my opinion mainly because he was too brief as he moved through chapters 10-29. Proverbs is a difficult book to organize because most of its verses are 2 line thoughts on a single subject. So you are left with the task of combing through the chapters to group Proverbs on a given subject. I would like for Kidner to have applied his skills to grouping the Proverbs by subject more than he did (he did a little of this at the start of the book in his "character sketches" which were very good). I still gave it 4 stars because he does an overall good job and the book did help me teach this in Bible class.

Needs more worked examples

This is the best book by these authors as it is the only one that has an accompanying software. What the audiences really need are some worked examples that they can implement themselves and check with the results in the book using the software provided by the book. However, for this to be accomplished, all the details of the problem are needed. This book can be substantially improved if more worked examples that pertain to the real world problems such as a multistorey building on a typical site or on a tunnel etc. can be included. Within its present form, I do not recommend it to people other than PhD students working in the field. Even PhD students will need other books or resources to refer to when using this book. Needs more number of worked examples!

The new crew trained for the remainder of the summer and t hen sailed to Pearl Harbor in time to join the newly established Fifth Fleet. Under t he command of Admiral Raymond Spruance, the Fifth Fleet was given orders to invade Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands in November 1943. This offensive, along with naval battles in the Philippine Sea, the Leyte Gulf, and the invasion of Iwo Jima in February 1945, is chronicled from the perspective of a young deck officer and is integrated with the background of the larger conflict, including the politics of command. After Japan?s surrender, the Cotten became a part of the Occupation Force anchored in Tokyo Bay. Robinson deftly narrates how he and his friends took advantage of their good luck and brought their roles in the war to a fitting conclusion.

Snelling Robinson, 200,000 Miles Aboard the USS Cotten (Kent State University Press, 2000) The Cotten was a Fletcher-class destroyer, built in 1943 for the express purpose of protecting America1s new fleet carriers from Japanese aircraft, submarines, and surface vessels during the final years of the greatest naval war in history. Indeed, it would be this hard-hitting combination of ships -- the fast carrier task forces commanded alternately by Admirals Marc Mitscher and "Slew" McCain with their supporting cast of battleships, cruisers and destroyers -- that would prove decisive in the Pacific War. The carriers captured the glory, but their success was greatly facilitated by the largely unsung "small boys," the hard-working, hard-riding destroyers. Snell Robinson1s superb account of his three years aboard one of the most ubiquitous of these destroyers is therefore a welcome new arrival among the body of literature of the savage fighting in the Central Pacific. Robinson came of age as a junior officer among the 300-member crew of USS Cotten (DD 669). He served principally as the ship's navigator, qualified as officer-of-the-deck underway, and stood his General Quarters post in "Sky One," the exposed gun director at the highest point in the ship. By fate, Robinson and his ship survived some of the greatest and bloodiest naval battles in history -- the forcible amphibious assault landings at Tarawa, Saipan, and Iwo Jima, and the enormous fleet engagements in the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf. The vast scale of this sea war is reflected in the record of this one small destroyer, needle-thin with its maximum beam of 39 feet, steaming the equivalent of eight circumnavigations of the earth in its endless screening missions to protect the precious carriers. Robinson describes life aboard Cotten in its alternating monotony and terrifying action with a navigator1s attention to time and space and an honest appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of himself and his shipmates. Few authentic veterans have ever done a better job portraying life at sea on a small man-of-war. His narrative is crisp, informative, authoritative. Robinson describes the difficulty of his gunners trying to shoot down a night-raiding Japanese bomber by aiming at the exhaust flair -- "like shooting at the white tail of a running deer." He admits his awe at observing Task Force 58, now some 95 ships strong, sortie from Majuro Atoll in the Marshalls, heading west towards Saipan. He admits his fear -- everyone's fear -- at the report that the Japanese Mobile Fleet, including the two largest battleships in the world, had erupted into the Philippine Sea in search of Mitscher1s carriers. He describes how a destroyer at flank speed tends to squat by the stern; a sailor standing on the fantail would actually have to look up to see the surface of the ocean. And he informs us that the greater danger in the suicidal Japanese kamikaze attacks actually came from "friendly fire" as the entire fleet blazed away at the low-flying intruders. Nicely illustrated with maps by cartographer Mary C. Hoffman, this book is a hand-crafted jewel. I heartily recommend it to anyone interested in an unblinking account of the great sea war of the 1940s.

"Can do" up close.

This book is unlike most first-person accounts of sea duty during WWII. It includes aspects of seamanship and detail that don't ordinarily make it to the page. It expresses the exuberance and wonder of a young naval officer, despite having been written from the vantage of maturity. Perhaps this is because it was written from the author's contemporaneous ships' logs, but may be intended to relate experiences together with original feelings and attitudes. This has charm. It's self-effacing rather than self-important. One listens more closely, as to a youngster. The book deals with the Allied occupation of Japan; this is unusual, too. Also, the author's preference for Spruance over Halsey, shared by many, but expressed by few. The author served on one ship throughout the war. His theme comes through clearly: Many more served than saw action. The greater threat was boredom, not terror. Well written, though its language is a bit stiff; interesting; useful for young officers, as a guide to getting along. Demonstrates "can do" attitude of those who served on destroyers, including reservists.

Good material, but....

This book is full of information useful to pilots with limited experience in the jet culture. It covers every major topic in great detail. So, for the information alone, the book is worth the price. I also heavily recommend this book for experienced pilots and/or instructors.

On the downside, there are many misspellings and incorrect assumptions. On multiple occasions, I found the text referring to the ATP Certificate as an ATR, using FFA instead of FAA, using 'their' instead of 'they're,' and so on. I find these disturbing to the reading, but others may not. One incorrect assumption was the author saying 'all airlines perform XYZ...' Well, an airline for which I have flown in the past did not perform XYZ.

I find 90% of this book and included CD-ROM to be useful. However, for a text book (which it calls itself on the back cover), there is some serious editing that needs to be done. Also, I would recommend the new author update much of the material for today's more modern aircraft. Some of the aircraft and examples in the book are very outdated. The included CD-ROM is an excellent first step to manage that.

First few chapters are great.

First few chapters are full of great information. After that it is a basic guide to passing airline simulator maneuvers. The inclosed computer disk I never opened as it seemed like something the publisher required be added for the updated edition. The new author just threw in some operating manuals to meet this requirement.

If I had only one book

As a Check Captain for a major airline I have to stay up on procedures and techniques. This book has been my constant reference source for over 18 years. Every time I pick up my dog-eared copy I am astounded at the wealth of information that is contained between its covers. It is a postgraduate course in flying in the real world and should be on every pilot's bookshelf. I recommend it to all the new hire First Officers I work with. The other book that belongs on your shelf is Robert Bucks "Weather Flying".

Excellent Biography of a Runaway Girl

Exceptionally well written. Her overall story is compelling, with descriptions of the events and situations she lived that ring true. Rather than overstating and embellishing the truth for dramatic effect, Carissa's story of hope and possibility rings true and accurate. It is refreshing to hear her biography, including a childhood with some crappy circumstances, told without the sense of self-pity, victim-hood and entitlement that is so prevalent today. She has risen above the abuse she endured.
This book opens the door for people from all walks of life to partially understand life on the streets in America, but also may be especially helpful for at-risk youth who are flirting with dangerous forces such as substance abuse and human trafficking.

Slow to start, slow to finish. The majority was good. One of my issues is that I think she left a lot out of the book as to growing up in a "troubled home" and being abused. The way it appears is that her stepfather threw her out of the front door while she was in second grade. Then, she ran away at the age of 12 because she got grounded and her siblings picked on her. That happens to the majority of us, so I guess I don't understand what was so bad that she went through what she did. I needed more background. And I'd like to know where she got the money for all of her schooling. It was well written, with less than a handful of typos. I would recommend reading it.
