Doesn't Really Tell You What the Top 2% Does - Too Generic

This book has an interesting premise. I purchased the book on the recommendation of the Heath brothers, who wrote the book “Made to Stick",

Unfortunately, the Alpha Project Managers book is not very strong and probably not worth buying. I have a degree in Industrial Engineering and purchased many project management books over past 20 years since it's related to my field.

This book is really a survey of 800 project managers with a summary of responses. It should be a PDF or presentation document. It is stretched into a complete book. The insights are very lacking and generic.

There is no overarching strategy. There's no overarching system, There's no overarching approach that could take you from an average project manager to an elite one. There's no focus on the nuances that separates the best managers. (However, they do interview the top 2% of managers)

So this book really doesn't help you improve as a project manager. It's just summarizing a lot of survey results from top project managers but it's not delineating the differences in a way that's practical. I would give this book 2 stars out of 5 because it doesn't really need to be a book. It should be a presentation.

A Useful Guide to PM Excellence

After using his super PMP study guide some time back, I picked up Andy Crowe's `Alpha Project Managers,' published in 2006.

This has to be one of the most under produced books I've ever seen. Crowe essentially self-published on his own Velociteach label. It shows. The graphics are third rate and the cover is pretty bad.

But no matter. The information inside is fascinating. Crowe surveyed over 3,000 project managers and their co-workers/supervisors in order to identify the "top 2%" of project managers ("alpha project managers"). He tried to identify PMs who were consistently rated as excellent by the people they worked with and their customers. Once he found them, he zeroed in on their work habits and PM techniques.

Some of the interesting findings:

# Alphas respond to fewer emails/day and spend less time in meetings than non-alphas, yet people rated them as being more responsive than non-alphas.
# Alphas establish explicit communication expectations, and adhere to them stringently.
# Alphas sent much shorter communications than their non-alpha peers.
# Alphas spent twice as much time in the planning phase of their projects than did non-alphas.
# Alphas used informal networks to get things done much more often than non-alphas (who stuck to formal channels).
# Alphas were much more aware or how their bosses were being measured (ROI, etc.) than non-alphas.

Each of these points (and others) are supported with some useful anecdotes from the PMs themselves. Crowe does a good job trying to help PMs understand these habits and apply them to their own work. This is a text which deserves wider recognition and higher quality production in a second edition.

Actual and perceived differences in project management behavior and practices

The subtitle for this work would probably be more aptly worded "What the Top 2% DO that Everyone Else Does Not". However, at the same time, the content of this book should not be expected to provide concrete actionable items to address the individuals targeted in the dedication, worded by the author thusly: "To any project manager who has ever lain awake at night and wondered if there were not a better way". The conciseness that Andy Crowe provides here is commendable, but the less than 200 pages of content provided in the compact format of this book does not leave room for much more beyond a presentation of the project manager study he conducted. Unlike the comments of some other readers, however, this reviewer thinks that even though this study was not exactly scientific, there is much to be gained here even if such knowledge is solely limited to the fact that the author actually conducted formal research to determine what helps positively differentiate the top portion of project managers. What makes this study of particular interest is that information on effective project management is obtained not just from project managers, but from customers, team members, and senior management as well, providing a type of 360-degree peer review, because as the author explains, project managers frequently do not have accurate images of themselves as professionals. A total of 860 project managers were included in this study that provided 4,398 such stakeholders. This book discusses 8 major areas where top performers stand apart: attitude and belief, focus and prioritization, communication, approach, relationships and conflict, alignment, issue management, and leadership. In the opinion of this reviewer, the conclusions of this study that highlight real and perceived differences between Alpha project managers and the other 98% of the project manager pool can serve as yet another aid along the path of personal continuous improvement. Within the closing pages of this book, the author remarks that "it is almost universally true that small things can make a big difference. The gap between the Alphas and the other 98% of the population may be quite large on some levels; however, most of this is caused by very subtle behaviors and differences. Both groups show up for work, plan their projects, manage their teams, deliver the results, and gain the customer's acceptance. In most regards, what they have in common is much greater than what separates them". Also, "when an entire population possesses highly similar characteristics, any advantage, however small, can have very significant implications. Small differences in behavior and practices can account for large outcomes, both actual and perceived".

A former member of the Pulitzer Prize Board, Bok is a fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.

Thank you Sissela Bok

On the subject of lying, this book is the best of the lot. The author tackles the hard questions like, what is lying, while many of the more erudite academic authors skirt that detail. This book originally appeared in the 1970's before the tendency to morph moral issues into scientific incarnations was intellectually acceptable. So it remains the most honest book on the subject of lying.

Excellent, thought provoking, and exhaustive

If interested in Sissela Bok, be certain to read Lying first, followed by Secrets. Lying establishes Bok’s style perfectly, and raises questions about the ethics of interpersonal communication. Her philosophical dissection of moral and ethical issues are exhaustive, often to the point where I would think “Wow, I never thought of it like that.”

Bok does a great job of translating vague and intangible concepts into debate-worthy questions. As a reader you will be forced to meditate and mull over what you read, trying to understand what you believe to be right. Bok’s analysis of lying and deception is open to interpretation, but her morals are evident near the end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who holds an absolutist view on lying. As well as those who are constantly justifying themselves.

Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire

Call 911. No matter where you look these days, there's an American political campaign with its pants on fire. Today's New York Times article on the subject puts it this way: "Negative, out of context attack ads by both sides have come to define the presidential campaign." The campaigns for contested down-ballot offices are just as virulent. David Brooks, the Times' op ed page columnist, wrote (July 30) that "both parties are driven more by hatred than by love" and engage in "carpet bomb[ing]" negative ad campaigns in the indemonstrable hope that "the sheer weight of the barrage" will help their candidate.

Meanwhile, the polls uniformly report that a substantial majority of Americans are sick and tired of the shrill commercials and the bitter end partisanship that has brought our government to its knees. Sissela Bok, an expert on lying, its justifications and consequences, makes clear the price we pay when we are lied to. One lie, unchallenged, begets another and another. Unless stopped, "government leaders will have free rein to manipulate and distort the facts and thus escape accountability to the public."

The candidates justify their lies on the grounds that they are better suited to govern than their opponents. Quite the contrary, the more a candidate lies to win election, the more likely he or she is to lie in office at the cost of losing our trust and, in the process, the ability to govern effectively.

"Lying" is a comprehensive treatment of the history and practice of lying at all levels of society, from family matters (lying to children, the sick, and the elderly) to lies to protect colleagues and one's self from criticism and blame, lies in business and commerce for gain or to head off loss, and lies of state in war and in peace. Bok treats the justifications advanced for lying, the consequences that result from deceit, and demonstrates that valid justifications for lying at any level are rare and should always be subject to scrutiny and debate.

"Lying" should be required reading for everyone in authority and everyone subject to authority. Unless we can trust those who lead us, and unless those of us who follow are able to hold our leaders accountable when they violate our trust, no amount of hand wringing over the present sad state of affairs will get us anywhere.

Prayer, what do know about prayer? What is intercessory prayer? Dutch Sheets, a teacher and speaker, has put together a book that will answer these questions. Easy to understood and written to inform people about prayer and why and how the need for prayer is important.. He shares many stories of how people have prayed for many things and definitely seen answers. He does not say that they will be answered in the way you may want them answered or when they will be answered, but that there will be answered. He shares many miracles that he has seen and some that were shared with him. It is a great book for understanding prayer and how God will ask us to pray for many things by using the Holy Spirit and he (Dutch) uses scripture to make his point. The book is one of the best books about prayer that can you can find.

A Biblical definition of intercessory prayer from the book: “Intercessory prayer is an extension of the ministry of Jesus through His Body, the Church, whereby we mediate between God and humanity for the purpose of reconciling the world to Him, or between Satan and humanity for the purpose of enforcing the victory of Calvary.”

Hard to put down!

One afternoon during my prayer time, I heard the Holy Spirit say, "Dutch Sheets has a new book, I want you to read it." I had seen Dutch speak several years ago but I wasn't keeping up with his ministry. I found the book on Kindle and downloaded it. After reading it, I learned some new aspects of prayer, my favorite being Chapter 8, especially the part about the Holy Spirit's "Hovering." Chapter 8 alone is worth buying the book! Dutch also has testimonies about prayer changing situations. I consider this book very "meaty" concerning prayer and extremely encouraging.

Can I give this ten stars?

I wish I could give it more than five stars. I have attended church and have been a practicing follower of Christ all my life and have usually been frustrated with very little victory. I found this book and researched the author to make sure he wasn't some kind of snake oil salesman. He's not. I have learned more from the teaching in this book than from 40 years' worth of sermons combined. (Another great resource is Prayers that Rout Demons and Break Curses by John Eckhardt.) The church is lacking SO MUCH when it comes to teaching us the power we have in Christ among other things. Dutch Sheets writes in a way that paints a picture that helps you understand biblical accounts you've heard thousands of times, but never truly understood. If you are searching for truth and tired of the "spiritual milk" you've been fed, then get this book! I never before understood just how complete the work of Jesus on the cross was (and is) and how the Father very much wants to work with each of us to accomplish His will. I can't write enough about all the revelation I've received. I loved this so much I purchased 8 used copies to give to people I may encounter who are searching and I am going to order more. Get ready to be Prayer Warriors! All is not gloom and doom! We can change things in this world for the better if we ask the Father to RELEASE HIS POWER!! Woo hoo!! Oh, and also...this was a used book. Very good condition.

In June 2014 I lost Nikki, my dear irreplaceable partner to pancreatic cancer. It was a short but very painful exit. She was gone just five months after being diagnosed. I was bereft to say the least. I needed to re-group and perhaps re-invent myself. Months later I decided to consider new horizons.
My pleasure is writing. Writers need something to write about. Why not a story about a solo circumnavigation of this great country of ours, visiting exotic places, meeting fellow-travellers from over the world and writing about that?
So this is my story, a proposed eleven-week adventure road trip commencing in July, 2015. There were some safeguards that needed to be addressed. I'd decided that travelling alone I must be careful. Sixteen years ago (just six months after my first wife died) I tried this caper with only my Blue Heeler dog Nugget for company. First night out I suffered a stroke and fell out of bed. My mobile phone was nearby. I wasn't far from home. Fortunately my sons arrived and retrieved the situation.
I'm no stranger to road trips. With my two partners I've been involved with all manner of recreational vehicles for the best part of thirty years.
The 'rig' I'm taking on this particular adventure comprises a 2006 Ford Territory petrol Turbo Ghia Station Wagon called Toot, towing a Jayco Outback camper trailer called the Penguin, and aided and abetted by a sometimes recalcitrant Google Maps App's lady called Carmen.
I like to keep my stories basically in chronological order. This story starts at the thought processes leading up to the decision to go with the Jayco Penguin Outback camper trailer, then personalising it, then doing a curtain-raiser before attempting the Big One. This involves several pages of technical matters that may or may not be of particular interest to all readers.
Accordingly the reader might plough through the preliminaries before the fun really gets under way. Or maybe, skip the preliminaries and go directly to the chapter, The Big One. Then return to the preliminaries later.
Whatever, I invite you to throw your backpack onto the back seat, make yourself comfortable in the front, buckle up and accompany me on this adventure. But a word of warning ... the pace is fast and furious and there's no time to stop and smell the roses!

Very interesting and very useful if one was interested in caravanning .Some very useful tips on caravan parks and toilet blocks! Very informative on the necessary preparation and the requirement to have a regimented and orderly manner of doing various functions associated with the day to day running of a successful caravan trip of such magnitude.my views of Around Oz in 45 days.

Romance novels, Unless they are Paranormal (yes, I know typical for most) I have not had a knack for them. Suspense, Thriller it didn't matter no matter what I did I had a hard time getting into them and then. I was given this book as a Review assignment from my director Kitty Bullard, She told me I just had to read it that I would enjoy it and that it would change my mind. I'm always open to try new things. Give them that good old fashioned try and so I did. Never will I admit this often but she was right. I didn't just enjoy it. I loved it. I loved it. It was fast paced and suspenseful but left me guessing at each possible angle and scenerio that could come of the multiple stalker situation. It had me grow that affinity for Casey where one minute I wanted to hug her and try to help comfort her from her horrible past to where the next I wanted to shake some sense into her out of frustration and the situations she allowed herself to get into.

Casey is clearly suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) where it affects some and they shut down or close themselves off , This is what I've heard call the Fight or Flight response. she has chosen to take what I call the Fight approach in stead of flight making her strong willed and defiant to the end. Refusing to admit that she can't handle anything on her own. She struggles like some of the men that have this disorder to relinquish control and to admit that this is a moment they need help. It shows just how much of that can be destructive to herself and others. Maybe I read a little more into the character than I should have but I found her well developed and proof of ones life , trials and tribulations things that happen some of them more shocking than one might admit or know can alter a person and their personality greatly. It's this and coming home that is allowing Casey to do the one thing she never really thought she would be able to do and that is face her past and possibly heal herself to save her future.

Scott is the good cop with a family background but he himself has issues refusing to settle down or make anyone deal with what his mother had to go through as being a cop ran in the family. He's just a good ol' boy that never expects to find a woman completely off what he figures to be his "type" in Casey not only is she his best friends sister but she's everything that infuriates and frustrates him but all in a completely good way. Making his job as bodyguard only that much harder while she's back home in her home town. The two having to deal with her family hiding the fact she's been stalked by a crazy serial killer and the rest of the stalkers who have a claim to her one odd way or another. Thinking everything she says or does is about them.

Once again I thoroughly enjoyed this book and perhaps , perhaps I'm definitely looking for more from this Author

"Forget Me Not is exciting and suspenseful..."

As Casey Martinez tries to put her painful past behind her, a stalker sets his sights on her. The FBI wants Casey far from her home in New York, so Casey heads back to Texas where her brother lives and her nightmares still remain. Detective Scott Weller is assigned as Casey's bodyguard. Scott doesn't want the job, and Casey doesn't want him there either. That's about the only thing they have in common, except sizzling mutual sexual attraction, which Casey is determined to keep hidden. With a killer on the loose Scott has to keep his feelings separate from his job. Keeping her safe is just as hard as keeping his distance.

Forget Me Not is exciting and suspenseful. While I was engaged and anxious to see how things would play out, subtle clues dropped here and there gave me a few guesses as to what might happen next. Scott charms with his good looks, sexy Texan drawl, and southern manners. While I liked Casey's feistiness, she borders on ice queen at times, especially toward Scott. And her smoking habit is unappealing. Her personality traits are understandable, considering what she's been through, and she does warm up, but she's a tough nut to crack. Forget Me Not is a good story, and it's packed with danger and action.

Great Read!!

OKay, so I don't usually read romantic books but I like to keep an open mind. I decided to read "forget Me Not" because it's more of a romantic thriller. I enjoyed the plot of the book although I did find it a little frustrating at times that the character seemed to act belligerent at times where she should have been grateful. -However, I still enjoyed the character and I was still able to sympathize with her. I think it would have been useful (from a reader's perspective) to read more details about Casey's past so I could understand her behavior a little better. Also, I LOVED Scott's character. He just sounded like such an awesome guy.
I enjoyed the writing as well. Terri Molina has a wonderful talent for telling stories. When I get lost in a story and really start to care about the characters I can always tell when the book I'm reading is a good one. I appreciated this book and I look forward to reading another one from her!!

About the Author
Paul Bradt has a BS in Computer Science from University of Houston Clear Lake. He has worked as a contractor developing various computer program types. He has experimented with the Arduino system and believes it to be an excellent tool for developing an understanding of how electronic components and hardware interact in integrated systems, and it is useful as a teaching aid in learning the basics of computer programming. He likes to perform sophisticated troubleshooting of computer problems and has found that the online resources associated with Arduino can be a great help for novice users to get their experiments operating quickly and effectively. David Bradt has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from New Mexico State University with many years of experience at NASA and in the Petrochem Industry. He is also a model railroader and enjoys adding realistic features to his compact HO layout. This is the third book the authors have collaborated on. The first book is titled Arduino Heat Transfer Science Fair Projects and the second book is titled Arduino Force Pressure and Acceleration Science Fair Projects

Micro-controller meets scale modeling

As an electronics engineer I liked his projects. I liked seeing multiple Arduino projects. I think enough basic information is given that most people could make a go of his projects. Note I'm not a model railroad person, I wanted to see yet another application of Arduino technology. And this book fit the bill, I even learned a few railroading bits and pieces along the way.
