An imaginative, compelling, well-written work

An imaginative, compelling, well-written book, yet one that paints an extreme vision that can unbalance the gullible mind and soul. The author's admonitions about a police state appear to have come true not as he imagined, but perhaps through an insidious, unyielding desire in those in power for social order that may sustain their power. His exhortation for individualism, and individual-centric freedom, while alluring to the rebellious mind, may well contribute to weakening social bonds, and result in a fragmented, tattered social fabric.

I beg to differ from this oft-quoted author whose name (Orwellian) has become synonymous with an oppressive, dehumanizing society. Are we really any different today, despite social organization that worships individualism? As in another excellent work, 'Humbling and Humility (HnH),' I think restraint and social consciousness more valuable than freedom and individualistic pursuits of happiness. HnH shows, through a deeply personal narrative, that inhuman treatment, and exploitation, by authoritarian social systems, is rather common in our civil, democratic society of the present.

The author's effort, while eminently readable, could well be a result of the scarring, life-altering impact of the second great war, and irrational fears of "The REDS are coming!" It is entirely coincidental that contemporary world events do indicate a rise in aggression by the very same people...

After 30 years, I finally finished this book

I originally read this book as a junior in high school, it was so beyond my understanding, I ended up with a "D" on the paper I had written. I recently was required to retread this book for a communications class I'm taking. With an Ashly's insight, and after having read LeBon's The Crowd, Ullel's Propaganda, and Patrick's The 10 Commandments of Propaganda, the scales fell from my eyes. What a terrifying tale. It seems Orwell was prescient when writing this book, he didn't live much longer after its publication, but he's spot on, N. Korea could easily be Oceana. Is the United States not to far behind?

Great story, poor Kindle rendition

Nothing needs to be said about 1984 as a story - it's an excellent read.

However, the publisher should be ashamed of the "Kindle edition" of this great novel. Page numbers (which mean nothing on a Kindle) frequently show up in the middle of sentences. It seems that the publisher scanned the paper text, ran it through some OCR software, and published the work without a human reviewing it for quality.

As imagined by the twelfth century Calabrian Abbot Joachim of Fiore, God's plan, entailed a march of progress from Abraham until the wondrous transformation of human life upon the defeat of Antichrist. While the march of progress transpired on earth, a spiritual movement impelled God's chosen ones to heaven in phases, on a stairway to paradise. The divine plan had first entrusted the Jews with adherence to the letter of the Old Testament; then it had entrusted the Gentiles with the more spiritual New Testament. At the culmination of history, God would endow both Jews and Gentiles with a full understanding of both testaments. The word of God would return to the people from whence it came, and the Jews would be converted peacefully instead of damned.

The Exception to Medieval Anti-Judaism

Robert Lerner's new book is a gem of medieval studies scholarship. His elagantly written and laconic prose covers the evolution of Joachism (from Joachim de Fiore, the 12th century Italian millenarian abbot) through several major Christian thinkers. Lerner's ostensible aim here is to illuminate the rare exceptions to medieval Christian anti-Judaism. The Joachites often had startling prophecies concerning the Jews, Lerner tells us, that resulted in oppression for these thinkers. Many were executed and/or imprisoned for years: this was the price of philo-Judaism. Most interesting are his chapters on John of Rupescissa (or John of Roquetaillade) and Peter Olivi, and of course on Joachim himself. This is a must read for anybody interested in a more nuanced understanding of Christian conceptions of Jews in the middle ages.

Path Not Taken

Lerner's book is a presentation of a part of medieval millennial tradition - the lineage which originates from the powerful personage of Joachim of Fiore. Within this tradition the author traces views on the eschatological role of the Jewry in the future millennial era.
The framework of the whole book is to demonstrate that in the high Middle Ages existed a way of thinking being an alternative to so-called common Christian anti-Judaism. This "path not taken" would be a strain of thought opposed to the one which finally prevailed - the "culture of persecution" having led humanity to the nightmare of the Holocaust. To great disappointment of the present writer, the thesis so strongly emphasised at the very beginning of the book reappears only in the conclusion. The whole book focuses on nothing but the presentation of the historical evidence. Although it is admittedly very vivid and well-ordered evidence, the theme of the aforementioned "culture of persecution" is so weighty that it should be, in my view, considered more thoroughly. Perhaps it is a task for a reader to undertake...
What seems here noteworthy is that the author dealing with Joachite tradition as opposed to the "culture of persecution" does not mention the attempts made by several thinkers (esp. K. L�with, H. de Lubac) to associate Joachim and his heirs with the totalitarian movements of the twentieth century. Funnily enough, the author does not even refer to the widespread assumption that the very millenarianism itself is inevitably connected with totalitarianism.
To sum up, the book gathers the evidence in favour of the view that not all medieval thinkers thought of the Jews in terms of Christ-killers or obdurate unbelievers. Lerner presents several figures who contradict one of the common prejudices about the Middle Ages: the view that anti-Judaism in the later Middle Ages was so overwhelming that no-one could resist it. The author shows that there were also thinkers - it must be admitted with sorrow that they were predominantly non-orthodox - who accepted the positive eschatological role of the Jewry in the future millennium.

In a thoughtful opening note, Long (Liplap's Wish) explains that she saw no point in creating a new Mother Goose collection "unless I could find ways to make it unique." She fulfills her mission in various ways: she includes a number of lesser-known rhymes, and she imaginatively softens what she calls "the more frightening images." Thus in "Humpty Dumpty," the egg that cracks open when it falls off a wall hatches a duckling, and the "baby" rocking perilously in the treetop is a young bird who flies to safety as the bough breaks. Long also notes that in one case, "The Old Woman in the Shoe," she has mitigated the suggestion of violence by changing the words; here her mother is a spider who doesn't spank her brood, but rather serves them broth and bread and "kissed them all sweetly/ And put them to bed." Working in her characteristic pen-and-watercolor style, Long conjures up winsome animal characters. She carefully suggests the texture of their fur or feathers, but she also kits them out in humorous garb (the cow who jumps over the moon wears a tutu and ballet shoes; nimble Jack is a frog in a tuxedo, and he leaps from one roof to another, over a lamppost lit by a candle). She links the rhymes inventively, particularly when she devises a single illustration to encompass two rhymes. For example, the jubilant frog who recites a relatively obscure verse that celebrates "a rainy day/ In the month of May" dances atop a lily pad; sitting near him, a mouse seeks shelter under other greenery and sings, "Rain, rain, go away." A robin's-egg blue ribbon that serves as a bookmark adds extra elegance to this handsome production. All ages. (Oct.)

PreSchool-K-Human beings are replaced by animals, reptiles, and insects, all elegantly dressed, in this exuberant nursery-rhyme collection, which includes 82 familiar and less familiar verses. The artist's avowed purpose is to keep the classic phraseology but soften some of the distressing images with her interpretive pictures. For example, Humpty Dumpty becomes a clutch of duck eggs hatching as they tumble from the wall and the baby on the treetop is a fledgling ready to leave the nest. The luminous, lively, full- and double-page ink-and-watercolor illustrations are seen from a variety of perspectives, and the rhymes are arranged in many different ways on the pages. Other creative touches include a spoon-billed stork running away with the dish and Jack Spratt as a small frog and his wife as a large toad. The juxtaposition of similar themes such as "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep" and "Little Boy Blue" and "Peter Piper" and "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater" adds to the fun. Even if your library's collection of nursery rhymes is already extensive, you will want to add this large and lovely volume.

Sylvia Long's Mother Goose

This is a beautifully illustrated version of classic Mother Goose stories and rhymes. I had been waiting to introduce Mother Goose to my fourteen-month old daughter because some of the stories are a little scary. I read an enthusiastic review about this edition in one of my parenting magazines and quickly made my order. The words are nestled around beautiful images that completely engage the adult. It is a fun experience for both the parent and the child to read this book. The colors and drawings are imaginative and compelling and convey the storyline in a positive, whimsical manner. I love the Humpty Dumpty page where instead of coming to an unhappy outcome Humpty the Duckling gets help hatching from his shell when the egg he is nesting in rolls off the wall. This and other stories are illustrated in the way that children understand these wonderus tales.

I love this book

I love this book! I purchased the hardback cover so it's more durable. It's great to hear the original nursery rhymes. For example, I didn't know that "one, two buckle my shoe" went all the way up to "nineteen, twenty, my plate is empty". It's a great way to develop a love of learning poetry at an early age and I love the rich history of the rhymes. This book contains all of the great originals. I highly recommend this book for your children's personal library.

Print Too Tiny To Read

I just bought this for my Kindle and couldn't believe it! The print was so tiny I couldn't see it even with my glasses on! Kindle has a setting that you can increase the text size but not with this little book. The text is within the design like a jpeg kind-of-text. It won't increase. Sometimes you can spread your fingers across the screen and enlarge the whole page but this won't even do that. It was ridiculous to create a book with print so very tiny it is almost impossible to read! Coming across this review reminds me that I need to call Kindle and get my money back.

Alan Fowler is a consultant, analyst and writer, currently resident in Ethiopia. For over 20 years he has worked with international development NGOs in Africa, Asia and the United States as manager, consultant, researcher, Ford Foundation Programme Officer and Visiting Fellow at The World Bank and the Society for Participatory Research in Asia, New Delhi. David C. Vinciguerra is the lead instructor for the Simulation and Game Development degree program at Wayne Community College. Prior to his current position he served as Co-Director of the Virtual Reality and Education Laboratory and Co-Editor for the internationally peer reviewed journal VR in the Schools while teaching graduate and undergraduate virtual reality courses at East Carolina University. David lives in Pikeville, North Carolina with his wife Jennifer and their daughter Natalie.

Andrew Howell developed a love for game programming while working towards his Simulation and Game Development degree. He has developed multiple games using the GameMaker and the Unity3D game engines. During his time working in the Simulation Development Laboratory at Wayne Community College he found teaching his skills to others enjoyable. Excellent - very professional

I just purchased this and have NOT actually done the exercises yet.

However, I have spent a few hours looking at the content in the book.

I have purchased 2 other books on this subject (both are pretty good).

The following is why I think this book deserves a FIVE star rating:

The first game assumes that you have NO prior knowledge of Gamemaker.
You can get the assets for all the games in the book on a website.
There are even helpful pictures in the book.
The book has a lot of material and goes WAY BEYOND for a beginner.
A lot of the material is not mentioned in my other 2 books.

Required reading

This was required reading for a Theology class.
The book was a good overview of Christianity as well as a few other religions. I think that it was more heavily influenced by Christianity/Catholicism, but as I was taking the course at a Jesuit university that was to be expected. Overall it was a thoughtful read and not bad for course reading

Used this book for introduction to religion class. As a text book, it was simple to read and comprehend. This book would make an excellent reference guide in studying the Christian Theology and the Catholic Church.
