When the elephants have a special day, should the other animals be included or excluded? Elmer is a colorful patchwork elephant, first introduced by author and illustrator David McKee in 1989. Because Elmer is such a special elephant, all the other elephants celebrate Elmer's Day, when they decorate themselves and go on parade. However, as they prepare for the special day, they are excited and noisy. All the other animals, including the lion, the tiger, the monkeys, and even the rabbits, complain about the racket to Elmer. He asks the elephants to be quiet, and they agree, but it isn't long before they're noisier than ever. However, Elmer has an idea. What is his idea? And will it work?

Not only is this a fun and visually attractive book for youngsters to read, but it also contains the subtle message for kids that it is better to invite others to play with you than try to keep them shut out. David McKee published his first children's book in 1964, and since then he has been one of the leading contemporary children's book creators. A very fun book

Unlike most of the elephants in the jungle, Elmer is a brightly-colored patchwork elephant. And, one day a year, the other elephants would decorate themselves in bright colors and have a parade. They called it Elmer's Day. But, when the other animals complain about all of the noise that the elephants are making, Elmer has a wonderful idea and he invites the other animals to be part of the parade!

This is a very fun book - the patchwork elephant, the bright and silly looking colors that the animals paint themselves - and you have to love everything to do with elephants! Yeah, it's a very silly and very entertaining book, and one with a great message of including other in your fun. Two thumbs up for Elmer's Special Day!

Elmer an excellent elephant across curriculum

The Elmer stories provide the opportunity for many activities across curriculum, as well as provoke conversation about social issues that 5 and 6-year-olds need to understand. The text and pictures promote easy comprehension of story and are interesting. I encourage student teachers to consider using the series to create a thread of learning as many of the essential age-appropriate learning skills can be easily simplified or expanded upon, depending on the learner's needs. All-in-all, an excellent series of stories about a lovable character and his ability to "fit-in".

Excellent book for any therapist doing groups with kids or teens

This is a great book for therapists working in group with children or teens, especially those with developmental or social disabilities. The authors use actual group transcripts and comment on the group process. Is also just an interesting read. I highly recommend it.

Hierarchical matrices are an efficient framework for large-scale fully populated matrices arising, e.g., from the finite element discretization of solution operators of elliptic boundary value problems. In addition to storing such matrices, approximations of the usual matrix operations can be computed with logarithmic-linear complexity, which can be exploited to setup approximate preconditioners in an efficient and convenient way. Besides the algorithmic aspects of hierarchical matrices, the main aim of this book is to present their theoretical background. The book contains the existing approximation theory for elliptic problems including partial differential operators with nonsmooth coefficients.
Furthermore, it presents in full detail the adaptive cross approximation method for the efficient treatment of integral operators with non-local kernel functions.The theory is supported by many numerical experiments from real applications.

A very informative book that identifies specific issues and factors that have lead to the extreme polarization in political ideology in this country. In the end, the attempt to draw people further apart is only making our government incapable of getting anything done. I find this book unputdownable, even though it fills me at times with despair, disgust and irritation. Kenneth Williams was a British actor and comedian of the 50s, 60s and 70s with an acute intelligence and a unique gift for comedy. He was gay, and for many years of his working life homosexuality was illegal. His comic persona used the "camp" stereotype and private language in a way that was far funnier than others in the same (small) field, or anyone since (Julian Clary, Graham Norton). He was widely read, inventive and gifted at ad libbing and eventually earned a living on chat shows and panel games. He had many friends in the theatre who obviously enjoyed his company. He was an excellent writer, one of the things that makes this diary worth reading. His writing is often as funny and perceptive as you'd expect from his public persona, revealing the surreal in the ordinary. But the diary also reveals a man with a dark side, someone who never found a way of living that made him happy. You long to say "Kenneth! Get some therapy!" His self analysis too often turns into navel gazing. He was tortured by guilt over his sexual feelings, constantly making contradictory statements and apparently trying to persuade himself he was above all that. He could also behave appallingly to people -- all faithfully recorded. He clearly came home and wrote the diary, justifying what he'd done. He certainly brooded over wrongs, but he often records apologising and making up. He has flashes of self-insight - that he really only feels at home among people outside his theatrical set. He really was extremely talented - and bigheaded with it. He must have been a nightmare to have in a cast, constantly thinking he knew better and trying to take over. Particularly in the early entries, he sometimes waffles on pretentiously, using long words you feel he doesn't quite understand, and giving an imitation of someone being profound. Then he'll follow the pomposity with a hilarious bit of observation written in a direct and slangy way. As a warts and all portrait, this is unequalled. And incidentally gives a fascinating insight into the stage/screen/radio/TV of the period. Sadly, he took his own life.

It will be a vest, I know not well how.' Charles wanted the new garment to be part of a restrained national dress for gentlemen and the vest flourished throughout Georgian times as a show-off garment made of rich silks and heavily embroidered, often in silver and gold. The book is divided into 3 main sections. Section 1 looks at the body unclothed and the different 'skins' that cover it; subjects include human skin, pale skin v. tanned skin, tattoos, piercings, fabrics, colours and pattern. In section 2 fashion is broken down into body parts and the relevant individual elements of dress are discussed - from head to toe. Body parts include the head (e.g., hats, hair, wigs), the shoulders (e.g. shoulder pads, straps), hands (e. g., gloves, jewellry), legs (e.g., hem lengths, pantaloons, skirt shapes, hosiery). Section 3 returns to the body as a whole to consider how these elements create 'fashion' and what different looks say about the way we dress. The author will cover subjects such as military dress and uniform, cult styles including the grunge look, goths and gangs. By breaking fashion down in this way, readers will understand why we dress the way we do and how this has been shaped throughout history. Each sub-section in the book (e.g., Skin, Neck to hips, Uniform) will have a timeline and a short introduction. Each of these sub-sections is then further divided into the individual elements (e.g. Neck to hips will include shoulders, hands and waist, etc.) The author envisages that each of these elements will be contained on a spread. So, for example, the shoulders spread would include an introductory text and a selection of images (photographs, painting details and drawings of straps, shoulder pads, epaulettes, etc.) with short texts that explain their historical context, their function and how they have changed over time. The book's dynamic structure and layout are equally suited for browsing and for serious reference. However, The Anatomy of Fashion is not simply a picture book. James Abbe, a 1920s fashion photographer, and Zoran, the designer whose simple, monochromatic clothes were extremely popular in the 1970s, anchor the 500 entries in this massive encyclopedia of fashion. Each designer, photographer, model, or icon gets a page with a large photo and informative but short caption. This has the wonderful effect of weighting each entry equally, thereby devoting the same amount of space to Charles Revson, creator of the Revlon cosmetics empire and relative makeup newcomer Fran�ois Nars, pioneering clothing designer Mariano Fortuny and contemporary favorite Tom Ford.

Clearly, a good set of eyes edited this book. It's a tall order to choose just one image to define the many facets of a designer, model, or photographer. The choices made here are excellent and often surprising. The indomitable Coco Chanel demonstrates the ease of movement her designs afforded women by briskly swinging her arm out to one side, while Kate Moss is shown at the height of her waifdom, likely the mode in which she will best be remembered. Model Linda Evangelista is pictured with curly locks of hair. It's obvious, too, that the editors employed the haphazard juxtaposition created by the alphabetical organization. Facing entries, no matter how seemingly incongruous, are united by a visual theme, to spectacular effect. The ovals made by the either screaming or yawning mouths of Kurt Cobain and his infant daughter are mirrored in a 1937 Jean Cocteau illustration of an Elsa Schiaparelli design. A model in a 1930s outfit by John-Frederics faces a portrait of post-punk design queen Betsey Johnson, whose floral outfit echoes the flowery silhouette behind the model. A troika of Robert Lee Morris bracelets matches the arcs of a bombed-out London building in a 1941 Beaton photo of a Digby Morton design. The vibrant prints of Emilio Pucci and Lilly Pulitzer fall together naturally.

The reams of fabulous images and the inventive design alone make The Fashion Book a treat at any cost, but the low price-to-size ratio (like its cousins The Art Book and The Photography Book) makes it a real steal.

Mini Edition may not be the best choice

This book was suggested reference material for a college course of study at FIDM. Initially I thought this was a paperback condensed version of the hardback book. Upon receipt I found it extremely difficult to read without a magnifying glass - the print is literally micro-small. At first I blamed my aging eyes, but my nineteen year-old daughter whom I purchased the book for has 20/20 vision, and she expressed a similar opinion. I would not recommend this version of the book - if you have the option, purchase the full size hard bound copy.

The Most Ambitious Fashion Summary Ever

This is the Reader's Digest Condensed version of the history of fashion over the last 150 years. Unlike Reader's Digest, this book succeeds in capturing the essence in amazing kernals of elegance, curve, design, and motion. Everyone who loves fashion should have this book. There is simply no substitute for it, and you will have many hours of pleasure looking at its exciting images and reading the descriptions. The book is a great value for its price, as well, which will help make it available to more people.
The book is in a novel format, one page each for 500 icons, models, fashion and accessory designers, make-up artists, hairdressers, retailers, illustrators, and photographers done in alphabetical order. Each page typically has one person (a few have two), with one image, and one brief textual summary of the person's work.
It is an amazing challenge to capture all of a person's work in one image, and some great successes occurred. Some of my favorites were Madonna, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Harry Winston, Naomi Campbell, Coco Chanel, Noel Coward, and Rudi Gernreich.
On the other hand, some of the old black and white images did not reproduce well. Some of the worst examples are Antoine (a hairdresser with a photograph of Josephine Baker's hair), Maria-Louise Bruyere (a designer), Christian Dior, Max Factor, Barbara Goalen (a model), Gucci, and Hermes. In many cases, these choices appear to have been influenced by the desire to have the facing pages converse with one another. So you will see echoes of design, line, and style in these ways. I appreciate that effort (which is often quite eloquent), but it should not slight the individual whose work is being portrayed. I graded the book down one star for the compromises made here not working well in too many cases.
After you have finished reading and enjoying this book many times, I suggest that you think about where else it would be helpful to have a similar work in your life. Perhaps a scrapbook containing photographs of all of your friends who have something in common would be a possibility. You could write a brief text about each. This could greatly add to your pleasure in remembering these friends, and perhaps expand their interaction when they see how you have put them together.
Keep to the essence, but be bold!

This book is a jewel!
Forever i have been interested in the common areas of Tao and Yoga, trying to understand who passed which tradition to who.
I usually underline and subsequently read a shrunk version of pretty much any book.. this one? EVERY SINGLE PARAGRAPH is crucial, hence i have not underlined one single concept, because i will be reading this again and again from time to time.
The author has a clear understanding of the history of these traditions, that in my eyes are some of the most interesting legacy from the past. China and India have a lot of common roots, as effortlessly exposed in this masterfully written book. Easy to comprehend by anyone with basic knowledge on the subject.
