A refreshing eye opener

Mr Lakhovsky, a french cancer researcher in the early 20th century, explores a very simple hypothesis. What if the battle of the microbes isn't about chemestry so much as about resonant vibration? All living things exhibit vibration and all systems have resonant frequencies. Would it not make sense that the body is overcome by disease when its resonant vibrational health is hindered sufficiently by interfering frequencies, both biological and environmental?

It makes a lot of sense. Having done some experiments myself in this area I am convinced there is something to this. Georges photos of Germaniums dramatically cured of cancer simply by placing a circular copper antennae around the plant give compelling evidence that there is more to life that meets the pill. His statistical data gathered on cancer rates about the city of Paris and relating it to the types of soil and water sources in the areas also add evidence to his theory.

The book reads more like a research report than a story but the subject is fascinating in itself and held my interest all the way through.

His Multiwave Oscilator could be a door to a new world of discovery and health.

Short version: buy and study Secrets of the Soil because it answers many questions Lakhovsky had but never found answers for. Secrets of the Soil is by two authors sympathetic to Lakhovsky, like myself. Secrets of the Soil : New Solutions for Restoring Our Planet

Another book, Your Habit Body, An Owner's Manual, makes many related aspects clear. Your Habit Body: An Owner's Manual

In the 1980s A NASA scientist friend of mine had a working Lakhovsky multi-wave oscillator (MWO) that I and others had personal sessions with. Not very impressive. I read this book then and could not make heads or tales of it. Now after writing 14 books in this field, reading Lakhovsky again, I can see why it remains problematic and no longer in print.

This is a confused book with a lot of interesting ideas and research thrown together. Unfortunately, the sum here is not greater than its parts and the whole fails to hold together in the light of "etheric formative forces," muscle testing, Bruce Lipton and brain balance topics.

We may be able to go further and say, despite Lakhovsky's initial successes with the MWO, what he wished to prove was true about cells--was not true. What he expected to see proved as accurate for cells was not proved, to my knowledge. I suspect we have here a classic case of an author chasing expected results ahead of building on experimental evidence and basic observation.

What did Lakhovsky hope to find in his research? Maybe someone can do this better than I; here's my attempt:
1) He hoped to prove the primary logical function of living cells, at the cell level, was frequencies; and,
2) Frequency modulation was the primary functional or operative activity of cells.
3) He hoped to find competition between cells and opportunistic bacteria and virus was primarily a competition between healthy and unhealthy frequencies.
4) Lastly(?) he hoped his MWO would address the (expected) need of cells for a huge smorgasbord of frequencies; from which, cells could pick and chose frequencies to counter harmful frequencies and strengthen healthy ones.

This explanation for the MWO's success was never provable in the sense that it was widely replicable; it was not, even thru several more modern iterations-variations on the MWO.

Lakhovsky's results with geranium plants are very easy to explain if you have read Secret Life of Plants.

How can we explain the medical cures of MWO if Lakhovsky was barking up a false theoretical tree?

Re-reading his book and looking again at his illustrations and experimental conditions, I think it's fairly clear how he confused a confluence of placebo effect and high willingness to heal, with more tangible and reproducible results.

Remember, a personal MWO session is a pretty impressive experience, similar to an MRI in many ways. You definitely feel like SOMETHING is happening. "SOMETHING is happening" experiences create the strongest possible placebo potentials.

I purchased this book (Prentice Hall Math Pre Algebra 2009 ...

I purchased this book (Prentice Hall Math Pre Algebra 2009 Book) to help my child with math over the summer. It was the book her school had used that previous year (7th grade). It has answers to some of the problems in the back of the book but not all. So I purchased the answer booklet that goes with the book (Prentice Hall Mathematics, Pre-Algebra Solution Key Paperback – 2009). Math has never been my strong suite, but with this book and answer book it was very do-able. The answer book not only has the answers but shows step by step how to get to each answer.
Her school is using a newer book this year (8th grade) which has been no use to us at all. But, this book is so well organized, we have been able to find help in this book instead. Well worth the investment for the book and answer book combo.

Fantastic!

"Prepare to Board" covers most pre-production aspects of an animation project, but focuses mostly on storyboarding and character design. This book does a better job on both these subjects than most other books can manage on just one.

A lot of storyboarding books out there focus on the live action or advertising methods where boards are used to illustrate an existing script a sell a rough concept to non-creative executives. The methods Nancy Beiman shows are far better suited to animation's use of storyboards to create the story itself.

Along with guidelines on how to increase the cinematic storytelling power of your boards, there are also plenty of tips on how to get that power across when presenting boards to others.

When it comes to character design, "Prepare to Board" is up there with Tom Bancroft's "Creating Characters with Personality: For Film, TV, Animation, Video Games, and Graphic Novels" as one of the few indispensable resources on the subject. All of her advice is aimed at making your character designs more functional for animation & storytelling (the most important asset of any character) as well as being unique individuals rather than stock characters.

The lessons Beiman shares in this book are exactly what you need to build a strong foundation for any animated project.

Excellent and very inspirational!

I'm just an amateur artist and animator wannabee... but I have found this book to be very inspirational and am now finding new characters just flowing from my pencil tip (or tablet stylus :-P ) so much easier now... Nancy is a top-notch artist and is equally a top-notch teacher as well.

A valuable resource

Nancy Beiman is a well-known figure within the world of animation, having been a long-time animator at Disney, Warner Bros. and elsewhere, and also having taught in a variety of contexts, including her current position at Rochester Institute of Technology. Anyone who knows Nancy fairly well understands three things about her: she is a very gifted artist, she has high expectations of excellence for her students, and she is very broadly knowledgeable about the arts, traditions of humor, and animation itself. Combine these characteristics with the fact that Beiman is one of the most accomplished female animators within the US industry, and you can understand why I was eager to see this book come to life.
Over the last year, I finally completed work on a production-related book, and during that time I consulted with Nancy on various topics. She told me about her own book and, knowing about her ecclectic background and broad knowledge base, I was eager to see how her project would be realized. What I found is pretty much what I expected, a book that introduces essential concepts, but enhances them with discussion of aesthetic issues and is grounded in an appreciation for the history of classical Hollywood animation, with breadth in examples from other animation practices.
So many animation students struggle with story and developing the cinematic aspects of their work, in order to tell their story visually. Beiman's book offers instruction in chapters devoted to the development of story, storyboarding, types of stories (situation driven, character driven, ways to manipulate the `real'), character development and design, scale and location. As the book's title suggests, a large portion of the text is devoted to storyboarding in various respects: sketches and working out roughs; story beats, sequences, and pacing; and visualizing a script, among other topics. She also focuses on refining characters and art direction, including the use of color. Finally, she addresses topics related to the presentation of storyboards and their use in the production process.
Beiman's writing will appeal to anyone from the beginning artist on up, as she writes in a colorful manner and uses a range of examples drawn from her own experience and her analysis of many films. Included in the appendix are interviews she conducted with A. Kendall O'Connor, T. Hee, and Ken Anderson, and the book itself is filled with quotations and short Q and As with the likes of Tex Avery and other well-known figures. Many illustrations--both instructive and humorous--enhance the book, adding extra appeal for the reader. A number of these images come from students Beiman has worked with through the years, attesting to her influence on many young artists.
Prepare to Board is highly recommended for libraries at institutions where production is taught, particularly at the high school and undergraduate levels, and for all artists wishing to learn more about character development, story, and boarding.

A fast and informative read!

I was very impressed with Robot Universe. I thought it was well written and very informative. A fun read while walking down memory lane with your favorite robots and wondering what comes next. It was academic; yet, personal at the same time. I also loved the layout, the pictures and the vivid colors and felt that they added much to the book.

Robot fan shows the love for robots real and fictional throughout pop-culture history

I love this book. Ana Matronic, lead singer of Scissor Sisters, loves robots so much that she wrote a book about them. The book is coffee-table size, so I would say it's good for sitting drinks on. But that would damage the book, and you don't want to damage stuff that has robots in it. The book is a sci-fi history lesson, and it'll give you tons of books and movies you've never heard of, for your purchasing and YouTubing purposes. I thought I knew my stuff, but this book is hardcore. It includes Rosie, the Jetsons' sassy maid, and it includes ASIMO, Honda Manufacturing's real-life humanoid robot. It's more than a picture book, and it's not an encyclopedia. It contains clever reviews about the place in pop-culture history of each automaton, as well as analysis of their stories. You can tell the love and fascination the author puts into each entry, and she expresses it eloquently. It's not a book you should read straight through. Read a little. Come back later. While Rune Magic is an awesome book I highly suggest you check out Pennick’s book, Complete Illustrated Guide to Runes. Not only is it a more mature book than Rune Magic, it’s also more concise and illustrated with hundreds of beautiful images and drawings. While Rune Magic has more depth on the magical aspects of the Runes it’s marginal compared to the key points both books share.

The fact that many authors have borrowed from Pennick shows his importance in modern Rune history. As to his particular approach I would say he’s a fusionist. He does honor tradition by giving the reader the traditional associations and correspondences for the Runes while at the same time adding his own. Some of his influences are Shamanism, the Celtic Tradition, and Continental Occultism.

An example of his personal correspondences for Wunjo are:
Numerical Meaning: Balance
Color: Yellow
Plant: Flax
Tree: Ash
Essential Oil: Marigold
Element: Earth
Polarity: Male
Time of Day: 19:30-20:30
Month: October 13th
Deity: ��inn and Frigg
Magic operations: True will and finding higher balance and harmony.

While I do not connect with some of his correspondences I did find some fruitful to meditate on. All-in-all Rune Magic is a good book. If you have the money I would say go ahead and get both books. If on the other hand you are strapped for money I highly suggest you get his Illustrated Guide to Runes for the reasons I stated in the beginning of my review.

Not your ususal 'cookbook' of runic divination.

In these pages Nigel Pennick not only gives you the history of all the known rune rows with their divinitory meanings, but adds in correspondences to Northern Deities, colors, trees, herbs, numerology, etc. Practical uses of runes such as sigils and bindrunes are also covered. Be aware though that this book was reissued by Thorsons in 1995 with the title "Secrets of the Runes". This is a really good book. It explores the runes and thier magick well, though if your just starting out, I'd wait until you've got a basic understanding first. I started with this book and found it to be a little confusing, but it is a must have for any collection.

Good, but I'm afraid it's outdated

I’ve given this book a lot of thought since I began reading it about 1.5 years ago. It’s very helpful for understanding a healthy approach to feeding your children in a “traditional” sense. I have considered these guidelines in forming a basic understanding of relationships with food and how to help your children with this. However, after careful thought and observation, I don’t think it adequately addresses eating in our modern culture, which continues to change at a rapid pace. The recommendations in this book are more appropriate for addressing food as a neutral stimulus, when in fact, food is not a neutral stimulus in our culture. It is exciting, enticing, and ever-present. It is also more loaded with junk than ever before. While I have considered overlooking this reality in my approach to feeding my kids, as the author suggests maintaining a neutral stance to foods of all kinds, I have decided not to adopt this approach. The author’s guidance was developed during a time (first publication in 1983) when low-fat foods were all the rage and I can see how this informed her recommendations. However, we have since learned that this dietary approach is not healthy or realistic and that sugars are more readily responsible for current health problems. In addition, the low-fat diet does put people at greater risk for binge eating. I plan to limit my kids’ access to sugars and to educate them about this rather than maintain a neutral stance. I also plan to maintain fairly easy access to healthy foods rather than scheduling snack times, as I believe this is more realistic as they set out on their own in today’s day and age when food is available around every corner. I wish diets in our culture were as simple as they were in the early eighties when this book first came out.

Good for parents with picky eaters

I went through a difficult feeding stage with my toddler and this book really helped me understand what *my* role in feeding her was. Definitely helped with my mealtime stress and anxiety.

The book goes through different childhood stages from newborn and up, so you can pick and choose to read the parts that are relevant to you.

I can confidently say that this book is an excellent guide for parents

As a dietitian and a pediatric nutrition enthusiast, I can confidently say that this book is an excellent guide for parents. Feeding can be a source of anxiety and frustration for parents and their children, but this book is an excellent guide to avoiding complications. I wish that it was organized in less of a conversational context, but I imagine it makes for an easier read overall. I, personally, just prefer for educational books to be set in a more outlined manner. Otherwise, I think all parents and caregivers would greatly benefit for this book.

About the Author
Jiang Rong was born in Jiangsu in 1946. His father’s job saw the family move to Beijing in 1957, and Jiang entered the Central Academy of Fine Art in 1967. His education cut short by events in China, the twenty-one-year-old Jiang volunteered to work in Inner Mongolia’s East Ujimqin Banner in 1967, where he lived and labored with the native nomads for the next eleven years of his life. He took with him two cases filled with Chinese translations of Western literary classics, and spent years immersed in personal studies of Mongolian history, culture, and tradition. A growing fascination for the mythologies surrounding the wolves of the grasslands inspired him to learn all he could about them and he adopted and raised an orphaned wolf cub. In 1978 he returned to Beijing, continuing his education at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences one year later. Jiang worked as an academic until his retirement in 2006. Wolf Totem is a fictional account of life in the 1970s that draws on Jiang’s personal experience of the grasslands of China’s border region.

Powerful Naturalism and an Extraordinary View into China's National Psyche

During Mao's Cultural Revolution of the late 1960's, a young college student from Beijing named Lu Jiamin was "sent down" like so many of his fellow classmates to live among and learn from the peasants. In Lu's case, his "down" was actually "up" as he was sent to the far northern planes of Inner Mongolia. Some thirty years later, that young man had become a senior academician back again in Beijing and as well the pseudonymous author as Jiang Rong of a startling (for mainland China) book first published in 2004 under the name "Lang Tuteng." The book became an instant best-seller in China, spawning enormous Internet debate along with pirated copies, unauthorized spin-offs and sequels, and reported a movie version in the works. Recently translated by the venerable Howard Goldblatt and published in English under the name WOLF TOTEM (a direct translation of Lang Tuteng), the book has already been honored as the first-ever recipient of the Man Asian Literary Prize (the Asian equivalent of the Man Booker Prize for English Literature).

Although drawn almost autobiographically from Jiang Rong's personal experiences, WOLF TOTEM is essentially an allegorical novel. Its hero is the author's alter-ego, the young and impressionable "sent down" college student Chen Zhen. Chen and other students are assigned to live with sheepherders and learn their ways. Along the way, he learns about animal husbandry and the customs of a Chinese minority group, hunts wolves, steals a wolf cub from its mother's den in order to raise it, and watches the sudden, unstoppable intrusion of Beijing's destructive bureaucracy into Mongolia's life and lands (as embodied to the point of caricature by the stunningly indifferent Bao Shungui).

Of course, the allegorical aspect of the novel is the proximate cause of its notoriety in China. Jiang Rong makes clear that the aggressive wolves represent historically the warlike nomadic tribes such as the Mongols. They are the meat-eaters, the makers of history, and their spirit has been transferred over time to the West. By contrast, the passive and meek sheep represent the Han Chinese by his estimation - settlers, farmers, vegetable eaters, ruiners of the great grasslands, and the people mortally fearful of wolves. Through Chen Zhen's gradual awakening to Mongolian life and that of wolves, the author questions the spirit and soul of the Han Chinese, the massive majority of mainland Chinese people. In a very real sense, WOLF TOTEM calls into question the Chinese national character. It is this national psyche that has been habitually belabored within China by feelings of powerlessness in the face of the West, from the march of the Eight Powers into Beijing in 1900 to sayings like, "In the West, even the moon is bigger." It is also this national inferiority complex that motivates China's responses to currency devaluation, the Olympics, Tibet, and nearly every other aspect of its present-day relationship to the West.

Jiang Rong clearly poses other awkward questions as well about Chinese government policy. The Chinese steamroll blindly or blithely over Mongolian culture and tradition; even the well-intentioned Chen Zhen violates centuries-old custom of not raising a wolf out of self-centered curiosity. Equally discomfiting, the Han Chinese are portrayed as horrific despoilers of grasslands that have supported nomadic tribal existence for thousands of years. Later scenes in the book portray a virtual Mongolian Eden of rich grassland, pure water, and abundant wildlife callously plundered to destruction by ignorant and avaricious Chinese officials and "settlers." Heart-rending descriptions of Chinese wolf hunting by rifle, mass killing of marmots, and slaughter of swans generate strong emotional feelings of anger and irretrievable loss in the reader. The sense of loss is palpable, particularly as expressed through Chen's "adoptive father" Old Man Bilgee. At times, old Bilgee's powerless horror at unfolding events and inescapable loss was reminiscent of Iron Eyes Cody, the "crying Indian" from the 1970's anti-littering television commercial campaign.

On the plus side, Jiang Rong's book is a wonder of wolf naturalism, a literary work that draws pictures of life on the Mongolian steppe as effectively as a National Geographic photo spread. While not nearly competitive with the literary strengths of Cormac McCarthy, some of the "wolf as hunter" and "wolf as hunted" scenes are reminiscent of McCarthy's extraordinary opening scene of man versus wolf in THE CROSSING. In fact, the writing at times waxes so lyrical over wolves and their seemingly extraordinary hunting skills as to border on unbelievable, totemic in the most pantheistically religious sense of that word. The author's intimate descriptions of nomadic herding life in the harsh Mongolian lands are equally powerful. For a mainland Chinese audience perhaps not yet accustomed to the message of ecological systems and symbiosis, Jiang Rong's exposition of the living relationships among herdmen, sheep, horses, wolves, gazelle, marmots, and even field mice must also seem positively revelatory.

On the minus side, WOLF TOTEM's literary merits are somewhat less stratospheric. As the main character, Chen Zhen lacks the necessary internal depth that would enable the reader truly to empathize with him. We never learn anything about his pre-Mongolian life or background, his family, or his feelings about having his education disrupted by Mao's notions of re-education. The wolf cub Chen adopts and hopes to raise to adulthood is in many ways a more empathetic figure, as are the old wolf-hunting dogs Erland and Yellow. Jiang Rong's writing is unnecessarily polemical and too often strident if not didactic. A twenty-page Epilogue taking place as a return visit some thirty years later does not fit the main text stylistically and only detracts by overexposition from the story Jiang Rong has already told.

WOLF TOTEM adds yet another to the list of recent artistic works, mostly cinematic, that idealize Mongolia as a sort of lost Eden or lost innocence (see for example, the movies THE STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL, MONGOLIAN PING PONG, THE CAVE OF THE YELLOW DOG, and even the current release of TUYA'S MARRIAGE) This is a wondrously entertaining story and remarkable if only for having originated out of mainland China. Read this book for its fascinating descriptions of wolf behavior and nomadic life and also for the light of self-examination and self-doubt it shines on a growing national power.

Worth the information about China and its ethnic miniorites

The publisher of Wolf Totem says that this novel is an epic Chinese tale and that is true. My wife received an advanced copy requesting a blurb, and she didn't have time to read the novel, so I did and it kept my attention. The main reason I kept reading was because I have had an interest in the Mongols since I was a child. Wolf Totem taught me a lot about this almost extinct culture. The one new thing I learned was the fascinating connection between wolves and Mongols and why this connection may have been the reason why Genghis Khan was so successful in his conquests. I recommend this novel to anyone that wants to learn more about the life of the Mongols and another aspect of the Cultural Revolution (Both Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie Fiction Anchor Trade Paperback and Red Azalea : Berkley Trade Signature Edition by Anchee Min show different aspects too). However, the philosophy of maintaining a balance with nature is a bit overdone. I got the message the first time the characters talked about it but then the topic comes up over and over and over--a bit to much for my taste as I felt it got in the way of the story that was taking place between the main characters and the wolf pup they were attempting to raise. I won't give away the but don't expect it to be a happy. Most Chinese novels don't end with happy endings. The publisher also said that the novel was a stinging social commentary on the dangers of China's overaccelerated economic growth as well as a fascinating immersion into the heart of Chinese culture. That is also true of Wolf Totem.

The present volume gives a systematic treatment of potential functions. This has led, at a number of points, to results either not found elsewhere, or not readily accessible. Thus, Chapter IV contains a proof for the general regular region of the divergence theorem (Gauss', or Green's theorem) on the reduction of volume to surface integrals. The treatment of the fundamental existence theorems in Chapter XI by means of integral equations meets squarely the difficulties incident to �the discontinuity of the kernel, and the same chapter gives an account of the most recent developments with respect to the Dirichlet problem.

THE book on classical potential theory

There are few books left in print on this captivating subject from theoretical mechanics. Kellogg's presentation is clear and mathematically formal. This is an excellent reprint from Dover.
Now, if Dover would only bring back into print MacMillan's "The Theory of the Potential" and maybe try to reprint Sternberg & Smith's U. of Toronto Press published (and out of print) "The Theory of the Potential and Spherical Harmonics", they would have themselves a trilogy to corner the science book market for the classical treatment of potential theory.
Kellogg stands fairly well on its own, but the other two books just mentioned fill-in Kellogg's gaps.

Beautiful mathematics

A beautiful presentation which I much enjoyed in grad school. Now I need to return to the subject, but I can't find it in my lib. So I'm ordering another copy and looking forward to reading it again!
