Not an introductory text

This text in not an introductory work, it is geared toward upper division college or graduate level engineering work. By this I am referring to the math level in the book. If you are not willing to work with partial differential equations, integrals, dot products, cross products and dell operators stay away from this book, it is intended for engineering students and not for audio, broadcast, or film students looking for a greater understanding of sound/acoustics.

Fantastic and inspiring

If I should choose one book on the group of succulent plants called mesembs, this book would probably be it! The books more than 400 pages are packed with high quality color photos of all known genera of mesembs! Not all species of course, but a good and representative number of the most attractive and interesting species.

The accompaning information given on genera and species are just perfectly compact, precise and highly valuable. Whether the species are wintergrowers, grow on limestone and so on is easily aquired from the text.

Read the book and be amazed by this large and diverse genus of mostly southern African plants. This book is an important source of knowledge whatever is your level of experience.

I like the book very much

The book is very proffessional, covers a lot and have the practical tools for identification of the planes. The pictures are very good quality. When taking pictures of plants it is important to put in the picture a reference for the size (i.e. a Coin) to enable evaluation of the plant/flower size. The titles of the pictures are too small.
In general it is a very good books for these plants lovers and collectors of seculants.

Practically Married

Ms Rimmer did it again! I love her characters in this book. Tess DeMarley and Zach Bravo are such nice people. They do marry but they must learn to show their love. They each have a daughter from a previous marriage that are wonderful characters, too. They live on a cattle ranch in Wyoming where they are having some cattle rustling as a sub-plot which was very believable. This is the 3rd Bravo family book and I stayed up late to read it and it was worth being tired today!

Loved it! a quiet, mature romance with an exciting finish

I have read most of the books in this amazing series, and this is one of my favourites.
Tess and Zach have both been married before and each has a daughter. Now they are looking for companionship. They come together because its the 'practical' thing to do. Their entire courtship is quiet, almost subdued, missing the passion that is a trademark of most of Ms. Rimmer's books. In fact, Tess is harbouring a secret love for someone else. Which is ironic because the reader can see from the first page that they are perfect for each other. Tess' quiet patience and strength is exactly what Zach needs, and Zach's steadfastness is what Tess is looking for. The second half is a lot more fast-paced, and the climax had me holding my breath. When they finally confess their love for each other I cheered!

Good Read

This is the third (of 31, so far!) in Rimmer's Bravo line, one of my all time favorite series.

This was a much quieter book than is usual for a Category. Both hero and heroine are self contained personalities, so the readers know more about them than the other people in their lives do. The result was a slightly melancholy tone. Because I cared so much for Tess, Zach's slow-to-see made me more angry than sympathetic. And I think Tess judged herself awfully hard for her feelings.

But both leads are incredibly likeable people, and I really cared what happened to them. The pace is leisurely and the Western setting compelling. The relationships with the secondary characters are complex and interesting.

Highly recommended.

About the Author

Laugh until you cry

This is one of the first books that I read when I was diagnosed with the same cancer as Mr. Diamond. It's an incredible book and I have recommended it to everyone I know, not just family and friends but health care professionals who treat cancer patients. It will take you inside what it is like to have cancer but at the same time it is also a really funny book. Somehow in the midst of the horror that is head & neck cancer Mr. Diamond is able to see the absurdity, irony and humor and show it to us. The same book is also available with the title Because Cowards Get Cancer Too: A Hypochondriac Confronts His Nemesis.

Being a reasonably squeamish individual, I am not in the habbit of picking up books devoted to any kind of illness - let alone cancer. But then I was drawn to the strangely chirpy cover of this book not by its title but by the name John Diamond. I was familiar with his writing long before his cancer columns in The Times. And it is testament to his terrific prose and probing insights that I managed to read this book in no more than a few days. His definition of cancer at the begining of the book is memorable for both its clarity and wit. But if there's one thing that strikes the reader throughout, it is the overwhelming passion for life. Even when things get tough - and they get pretty damn tough - Diamond manages to find something worth living for - whether it's the simple pleasures of being in one's own home and experiencing the smells of domestic life, or simply going to buy new clothes.
Don't be put off by the 'c' word. This is a minor masterpiece. A celebration of life - not the dwelling on death.

Wonderfully real, witty, droll and sad....

I hadn't heard of John Diamond till his wife Nigella Lawson became so well known- I wish I had known of him earlier and followed his various columns. It's always terrible when someone has an awful illness and dies, but wonderful to get some small insight into it and the real suffering encountered. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a book they simply cannot put down- as strange as it seems! Extraordinarily written and full of integrity.

Twenty-six years after the publication of her influential collection of essays On Photography (1977), Sontag (In America) reconsiders ideas that are "now fast approaching the status of platitudes," especially the view that our capacity to respond to images of war and atrocity is being dulled by "the relentless diffusion of vulgar and appalling images" in our rapaciously media-driven culture. Sontag opens by describing Virginia Woolf's essay on the roots of war, "Three Guineas," in which Woolf described a set of gruesome photographs of mutilated bodies and buildings destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Woolf wondered if there truly can be a "we" between man and woman in matters of war. Sontag sets out to reopen and enlarge the question. "No `we' should be taken for granted when the subject is looking at other people's pain," she writes. The "we" that Sontag has come to be much more aware of in the decades since On Photography is the world of the rich. She has come to doubt her youthful contention that repeated exposure to images of suffering necessarily shrivels sympathy, and she doubts even more the radical yet influential spin that others put on this critique-that reality itself has become a spectacle. "To speak of reality becoming a spectacle... universalizes the viewing habits of a small, educated population living in the rich part of the world...." Sontag reminds us that sincerity can turn a mere spectator into a witness, and that it is the heart rather than fancy rhetoric that can lead the mind to understanding.

Now, 25 years later, photographs and video of the bloody consequences of terrorism and war routinely fill the media, and Sontag offers a fresh, meticulous, and deeply affecting dissection of the role images of suffering play in our lives. Do photographs and television footage of the injured and dead serve as "shock therapy" or merely elicit a momentary shudder before they're forgotten? Do images of systematic violence engender compassion and antiwar sentiments or arouse hunger for revenge? Writing with electrifying clarity and conciseness, Sontag traces the evolution of the "iconography of suffering" from paintings by Goya, to photographs of concentration camps, to the first live and in-color war coverage to rage across television screens, that of the Vietnam War, to images of the destruction of the World Trade Center taken by amateurs and professionals alike. Sontag parses the difference in our response to images of terrorism at home versus abroad, and forthrightly addresses our pornographic fascination with images of the wounded and dead. Endemic Warfare, Endemic Gaze

This is a short but thought-provoking contemplation on how we as viewers respond to photos/artwork that displays suffering, and what the motivations of the creators of such objects might be, both conscious and latent. This is the first work by Sontag I've read, though it probably won't be my last. Her writing is concise, clear, and sometimes masterly. She brings Joyce Carol Oates to mind, or at least their nonfiction works have a similar, probing style (and here I'm thinking of Oates' "On Boxing").

This book focused primarily on photos/artwork related to war, which makes its scope perhaps smaller than I would have desired in a work with a title that sounds so sweeping. Therein lies my only quibble with a book that I would have otherwise awarded five stars. There is mention of everything from the Crimean War to Kosovo, but smaller incidents like the photos of the mass suicides of the Baader-Meinhof Group, for instance, receive no attention. Sontag is intelligent (that's an understatement) so I can't for the life of me figure out why she excludes non-war related images from the category of her titular "Pain" (the exception being lynchings in Jim Crow South).

That, as previously mentioned, is a minor quibble with an otherwise flawless study. It bears mentioning that the work is shorter than I would have preferred it to be, if only because Sontag's lucid prose is a joy to read. She mentions another work of hers dealing with essays on photography at some point in the course of "Pain." I think I will have to seek that book out. Hopefully it's a little longer. In any case, recommended...

Great work on the power and deceipt of images

Susan Sontag is known as a lover as well as a critique of photography. In Regarding the Pain of Others she focuses on the impact of horrible war-images - starting with paintings such as Goya's Disasters of the War (1810-1820) going up to the present, in which first photography and then film have taken over. She rightly and strongly criticises the old idea that 'pictures show the truth', and horrible pictures 'the truth of war', an idea especially popular in the Interwar Years (Ernst Friedrich, Virginia Woolf), but certainly anything but dead after 1945. Pictures have frames so they are framed (even when they are not staged or manipulated) and therefore can not show the truth in all its nuance, in all its effects. And besides: the photographer can have his or her intentions when painting or shooting the image, but that is not to say that this intention is indeed the consequence publication will have. A book that makes you think, and that is always a compliment.

Son of a Gun -- a woman at 16?

What a way to start a tale. Ashley Sullivan, daughter of the foreman Ken Sullivan, had been Jake Crenshaw's shadow all of her short life.
His parents, Joe and Gail Crenshaw love to have a barbaque party for any good occasion. They threw a party for Ashley's sixteenth birthday. She wanted Jake, a young man of 24 years, to notice her as a woman? She's gotta be kidding.

She wanted a birthday kiss and got a bit enthuseastic and Jake's body really embarressed him. How could he feel this way about a kid?
Then followed an nine year separation. Jake took over running the large ranch and Crenshaw holdings. And Ashley went to college and became a veterinarian.

Now we find 33 year old Jake playing poker when his cousin Jordan came looking for him. Jordan Crenshaw runs a horse breeding operation on the Crenshaw ranch until he can get his barn built.
Oh boy, Jordan interrupts Jake's game to tell him that his ex-wife, Tiffany has shown up at the ranch.

For Jake and his brothers, Jared, Jude and Jason being gorgeous blue eyed blonds the covers don't depict it.

Anyway, Tiffany finally gets around to informing Jake that he is a father of a little three year old daughter, Heather. She is a little doll.
Tiffany found out that she was pregnant after the divorce.

Jake needs help, he doesn't know what to do with a little girl. So he calls on his one-time friend Ashley for help.
Oops! she finds the attraction still there at 25. She had thought that she had put the attraction behind her. [finally someone who hasn't slept around].

She falls for Heather, and finds she is still in love with Jake - and the misunderstandings just keep coming.

You will love the Crenshaw family, their relationships to one another, and Ashley finally learning to understand Jake.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- M - great family tale.

Little shadow has grown up

Here's the story. Ashley sullivan tagged after her 'hero' Jake Crenshaw for yrs. Years later Jake got married (to another woman of course), divorced & became a 'surprised' overnight daddy! Asked Ashley for help with his daughter and one look at Ashley realised that his little shadow has finally grown up. I don't understand why he rejected her at the first place (reasons given not good enough/believable in my opinion) but I loved reading the book anyway. It's enjoyable & worth the money spent (as good as the 2nd book, Caught In The Crossfire).

Taught me better than my professor did

I really do not love math at all, however, considering I used this for an online class, I really learned everything from my math lab and this text. The professor did not teach us a thing, and the course was all reading, videos, and quizzes and tests, and somehow I still managed to get an A in the class with what I learned on my own from MyMathLab.
